UN plans to send at least 2,500 troops to Congo 28 Jan 2013 The U.N. chief plans to send at least 2,500 troops to eastern Congo as a “peace enforcement” brigade to help protect civilians and prevent the M23 rebels from capturing cities and expanding their territory. The Security Council would have to approve the new force. Last week, the council's president sent a letter to Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon giving the green light for deployment of unarmed surveillance drones for eastern Congo that would provide intelligence for the “peace enforcement” unit as well as the larger U.N. peacekeeping force.
