Say the two magic words: “Simon Jenkins” in the search window of this blog, and a few examples of exquisite nincompoopery will come up easily. But this horn of plenty never runs dry, and the tragic news from France gave Mr Jenkins more fuel to create more inanities. His last article, Charlie Hebdo: Now is the time to uphold freedoms and not give in to fear is just another gift for my collection. Simon Jenkins is so afraid of Western democracies undertaking harsh measures in response to the terrorism, of the “new laws, new controls, new additions to the agenda of illiberalism“, that he goes out of the way to persuade all and sundry that terrorism is not really a threat to anything. Including this inanity:

Terrorism is no ordinary crime. It depends on consequence. It can kill people and damage property. It can impose cost. But it cannot occupy territory or topple governments. Even to instil fear it requires human enhancement, from the media and politicians.

What can I say to the deep thinker? One word only: IS*…

(*) Well, ISIS, ISIL, you name it…
