The State of Georgia is one of the states that never adopted religious freedom protections in the nineties because “it could never happen here.” Well, now at the state sees which way the wind is blowing, a majority of State Senators have come out in favor of S.B. 129, religious freedom legislation.
I have been supporting this legislation for a year now. I have helped get people elected to the Georgia General Assembly who would vote for it. Members of the House and Senate leadership have told me it will get passed and that they support it.
Unfortunately, the Republican Senate Majority Leader, Bill Cowsert, joined Democrats yesterday to table the legislation in committee. According to two sources, Cowsert offered a poison pill amendment. Essentially, Cowsert embraced leftwing activists’ arguments that the Religious Freedom Restoration Act sanctions child abuse and discrimination and sought then to undermine the law. Keep in mind that the legislation adopts the federal language that Bill Clinton signed into law. Please call Senator Cowsert. Tell him to support the legislation and stop trying to add poison pills to it. Bill Cowsert’s phone number is (404) 463-1366.
Bill Cowsert is engaged in a typical legislative trick. Undermine the legislation in committee, then claim to support it and vote for it.
Unfortunately for Senator Cowsert, the Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee ruled his amendment out of order. Cowsert then sided with the Democrats on the committee to table the legislation.
With Republicans like this, who needs Democrats? This legislation is vitally important. Call Georgia Senate Majority Leader Bill Cowsert at (404) 463-1366. Tell him to support S.B. 129 and stop trying to gut it. A majority of the Georgia State Senate supports the legislation. The Senate Republican Leader does not need to gut it and he does not need to ally with the Democrats to defeat it.
Other members of the committee to consider calling:
Senator William Ligon: (404) 656-0045
Senator John Kennedy: (404) 656-7454
Senator Jesse Stone: (404) 463-1314
Senator Tommie Williams: (404) 656-0089
Make sure they know you want S.B. 129 to pass and not be gutted. Remember, leftwing activists are vehemently opposed to protecting religious liberty and are calling too. If these senators do not hear from you, they might think no one wants religious liberty protection.
