Surprise: ATF, Democrats Renew AR-15 Ammo Ban Push

It has been just four days since the ATF announced it was shelving the proposal to ban popular AR-15 ammunition.
We, along with other pro-gun groups, rejoiced. But at the same time, we knew the day would come when the Left would try again. After all, the ATF decided to “shelve” the ban, not abandon it all together.
But I don’t think anyone expected this gun rights victory to last only half a week…
These last days saw the White House, ATF, and Congressional Democrats all come out swinging with proposals for new gun control!
From the very beginning, we focused on how ridiculous the proposed ban was. Any .223/5.56 ammunition shot out of an AR-15 will pierce soft body armor. To go after one of the most common types of ammunition simply because it pierces the armor a little bit more is beyond stupid.
We said that the ban wouldn’t stop there. We told you that if the ATF succeeded in banning this specific type of ammo, all the other AR-15 ammunition loadings would be in the administration’s crosshairs. I regret to inform you that we were right.
In testimony before the Senate Appropriations Committee on Thursday, ATF Director B. Todd Jones strayed from the talking points and verified what we’ve feared all along. Instead of focusing just on M855 ammunition, the ATF Director went after all AR-15 ammo.
“Any 5.56 round [is] a challenge for officer safety,” Director Jones told the Committee. He then asked them to review and rewrite the 1986 Law Enforcement Officer Protection Act to deal with deadly “assault rifle” bullets.
Yes, you read that correctly. If the ATF had the power to, it would outlaw ammunition for the most popular rifle in America. Actually, under this logic, every single caliber of hunting ammunition would be banned because it carries enough force to pierce a soft vest.
Almost every single type of AR-15 ammunition on the market will pierce a police officer’s soft bulletproof vest. Obama’s ATF is claiming that the law needs to be rewritten because new firearm technologies make these bullets even more deadly. And as we’ve learned from Barack Hussein Obama, if Congress isn’t willing to change the law the way he wants it, he’ll just rewrite it himself. And that is what White House Spokesman Josh Earnest hinted at during a press briefing:
“The president’s commitment to putting in place common-sense rules that will protect Second Amendment rights, but also prevent those who shouldn’t have firearms from getting them, is as strong as ever,” Earnest told reporters.
Now disregard the first bit of propaganda. No one actually believes that Obama wants to protect the Second Amendment. The latter part is exceptionally worrying. Mark my words; Barack Obama is not going to take this sitting down. We were able to beat the ATF back, but now the Left is out for blood and demanding more gun control!
When the Democrats couldn’t get anti-gun legislation passed in Congress, the President took it upon himself to institute gun control by executive order. The recent ATF action was the culmination of these directives.
Now, Congressional Democrats have introduced legislation to go even further with the ban. Rep. Eliot Engel (D-NY) calls it the Protect Law Enforcement Armor (PLEA) Act.
Not only would this legislation ban M855 steel-tip ammunition, but it would also outlaw and regulate “weapons that might penetrate body armor.” “It is long past time that we restrict access to these incredibly dangerous weapons,” Congressman Engel said.
There it is folks. That language right there, if passed into law or enacted by Executive Order, would ban more types of firearms than you can even count. No more 12 gauge shotguns, no more hunting rifles, no more long range target rifles, no more Tokarev or FN Herstal Five-seveN handguns… the list goes on and on. Even the ever popular .22 lr round is alleged to pierce bullet proof vests on occaision by weaving through the Kevlar fibers.
The last time Rep. Engel introduced this bill, it contained a provision that outlawed the possession of any “handgun that uses armor piercing ammunition.” At one point or another, armor piercing ammunition has been made for pretty much every handgun on the market. It’s already illegal to use this dwindling supply of ammunition in a crime, but the Left wants to make it illegal just to own a firearm capable of firing it.
It could make millions of Americans instant felons just because they possess firearms capable of piercing soft Kevlar vests.
Enough is enough! Congress was prepared to move on legislation stripping the ATF of its authority to ban ammunition earlier this week. It is time to FORCE Congress to move forward with it before it is too late!
