Jenner, Gender, and Debate
There are two points of view:
- Sex and gender are the same thing, and it is mental illness that makes you believe that your gender different from how you were physically born.
- Sex is your plumbing, and gender is your wiring, and they can be different.
Bruce Jenner is now Caitlyn Jenner. Man is now woman. The media is exploding with pride that such a high-profile American icon would come out as transgender and they are more than happy to report on it as if nothing else matters. This is the pinnacle of the social movement to get what was deviant declared normal, and push for what was normal to be considered deviant. And that is not okay.
You see, transgenderism, homosexuality, and other variations of the traditional human sexuality are so incredibly rare in society, yet no one (except The Atlantic for some reason) acknowledges this.
But what percentage of the population is actually gay or lesbian? With the debate over same-sex marriage again an emerging fault line in American political life, the answer comes as a surprise: A lower number than you might think — and a much, much, much lower one than most Americans believe.
In surveys conducted in 2002 and 2011, pollsters at Gallup found that members of the American public massively overestimated how many people are gay or lesbian. In 2002, a quarter of those surveyed guessed upwards of a quarter of Americans were gay or lesbian (or “homosexual,” the third option given). By 2011, that misperception had only grown, with more than a third of those surveyed now guessing that more than 25 percent of Americans are gay or lesbian. Women and young adults were most likely to provide high estimates,approximating that 30 percent of the population is gay. Overall, “U.S. adults, on average, estimate that 25 percent of Americans are gay or lesbian,” Gallup found. Only 4 percent of all those surveyed in 2011 and about 8 percent of those surveyed in 2002 correctly guessed that fewer than 5 percent of Americans identify as gay or lesbian.
It can be chalked up to a successful LGBT movement, coupled with a total lack of education on the issue to the general public, but the fact remains that we can’t discuss just how infrequently it happens. That it does happen, that this little deviation in the wiring of a person exists, is supposed to be accepted by all as something that is perfectly normal and fine.
But that is not how everyone feels about the subject, is it? Regardless of how gay friendly or trans friendly you are, to even suggest that debate on the subject would be good for all involved is to have yourself destroyed by the activist left as someone who is narrow-minded (or worse, someone with ties to religious belief). Debate on the subject is taboo, and if you bring it up, you are shouted down and blocked out. Such is the way things work now.
Does Jenner have a mental health issue? Can’t even ask the question. Is Jenner really a woman? Just accept it.
Remember that glorious time when the country was founded on the idea of debate? Yeah, good times.
