Okay, maybe he spent the weekend partying, but now he’s back in action, and look out!
President Obama today is meeting with House and Senate Democrats he thinks he may be able to convince to desert their leadership and join with Republicans to pass fast track trade negotiating authority.
“As part of the Administration’s ongoing outreach on trade, the President will hold meetings today at the White House with pro-trade Democrats in the Senate and the House,” a White House official said.
According to reports, Republicans are going to try to move the fast track bill first, pass it, and then move separate legislation providing trade adjustment assistance – aid to workers displaced by trade. The process could begin this week.
The Democrats voted down the TAA measure last week, but Republicans hope that once fast track has been passed, the incentive to support TAA will be stronger. What’s more, Republicans may be planning to bury the TAA measure in a separate trade bill.
This will enable people who opposed the initial TAA bill to get on both sides of the issue and pretend they were for things before they were against them and so forth.
Because that’s how they roll in Washington.
Obama is also making calls. But did he call House Minority Leader Pelosi, who led Democrats in revolt against the trade bill?
The openness White House wasn’t saying.
