Religious leaders reject gay marriage ruling . . . In the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision declaring same-sex marriage a constitutional right, the battleground is shifting to religious freedom and whether religious people and/or churches can be compelled to sanction behavior contrary to their religious beliefs.The court’s 5-4 ruling on Friday directs states to grant marriage licenses to same-sex couples, but doesn’t address the actions of churches or other private groups. Conservatives and religious leaders say the decision is certain to embolden liberal activists and accelerate legal clashes between supporters of gay marriage and religious groups who don’t accept same-sex marriage. Rand Paul backs gay marriage . . . I acknowledge the right to contract in all economic and personal spheres, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a danger that a government that involves itself in every nook and cranny of our lives won’t now enforce definitions that conflict with sincerely felt religious convictions of others. Some have argued that the Supreme Court’s ruling will now involve the police power of the state in churches, church schools, church hospitals. Rand Paul in Time
GOP Congress reluctant on gay marriage fight . . . Leading Republicans issued restrained responses to the historic Supreme Court ruling on same-sex marriage, an indication that the issue is unlikely to be a priority for the GOP-led Congress. Politico
Huckabee: Civil disobedience may be necessary . . . Christians may be forced to choose between following their consciences and following the law, warned Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee. The former Arkansas governor claimed Friday’s Supreme Court ruling granting same-sex couples the right to marry means there are few options left for Christians. Washington Examiner
Texas AG: County clerks can refuse gay couples . . . County clerks in Texas who object to gay marriage can refuse to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples despite last week’s landmark U.S. Supreme Court ruling requiring states to allow same-sex marriage, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said on Sunday. Iran talks will miss June 30 deadline . . . International negotiators confirmed Sunday that talks on limiting Iran’s nuclear program will continue into July, missing a self-imposed deadline for a final agreement. “If a few additional days are needed we can take them,” Federica Mogherini, the European Union’s foreign policy chief, told reporters in Vienna. Jewish population finally reaching pre-Holocaust level . . . The Jewish People Policy Institute said there are currently 14.2 million Jews in the world. Palestinian stabs Israeli soldier . . . A Palestinian woman stabbed a female Israeli soldier in the neck at a checkpoint between Jerusalem and West Bank city Bethlehem on Monday, police said, in the latest such attack in recent days. AFP
Greece shuts banks . . . Greek banks are closed and will stay shut for the week, after the country’s debt crisis took a dramatic turn. But cash machines are due to reopen in the afternoon and there are reports of fresh queues. Greece decided on Sunday to shut banks and restrict cash withdrawals after the European Central Bank resolved not to extend emergency funding. BBC
Puerto Rico can’t pay its debt either . . . The governor of Puerto Rico has decided that the island cannot pay back more than $70 billion in debt, setting up an unprecedented financial crisis that could rock the municipal bond market and lead to higher borrowing costs for governments across the United States. Tucker Carlson rips editor over anti-gay marriage ban . . . Second NY prison break fugitive captured . . . A veteran New York State Police sergeant was alone and on a routine patrol when he shot and captured convicted murderer David Sweat Sunday afternoon. When Cook, who is also a firearms instructor, realized Sweat might get away, he fired two shots. “He realized Sweat was going to make it to a tree line, and possibly could have disappeared — and he fired two shots from his service weapon,” D’Amico told reporters. Six NC shark attacks in two weeks . . . A teenager was in serious condition Sunday after being bitten by a shark off North Carolina, the latest in a string of shark attacks that have swimmers in the state gripped by fear. Fox News
