U.S. ignoring Iran violations . . . United Nations monitors said governments reported no new incidents of Iran violating Security Council sanctions against its nuclear program, even though some have unfolded in plain sight. “The current situation with reporting could reflect a general reduction of procurement activities by the Iranian side or a political decision by some member states to refrain from reporting to avoid a possible negative impact on ongoing negotiations” between Iran and six world powers, said a panel of experts for the UN committee on Iran sanctions in its latest report, dated June 1 and made public Tuesday. Since President Barack Obama took office on Jan. 20, 2009, the EPA has issued 3,373 new final regulations, equaling 29,770 pages in the Federal Register and totaling approximately 29,770,000 words, according to a count of the regulations published in the Federal Register. Government study tries to show earth warmed recently . . . “While I’m sure this latest analysis from NOAA will be regarded as politically useful for the Obama administration, I don’t regard it as a particularly useful contribution to our scientific understanding of what is going on,” Judith Curry, a climate science professor at Georgia Tech, wrote in a response to the study. GOP: Dems holding defense spending hostage . . . The House on Wednesday is considering a fiscal 2016 defense appropriations bill under the threat of a White House veto and near-certain opposition from Democrats objecting to plans to shift some $37 billion in operations and maintenance spending into a war funding account. Republicans, meanwhile, are lashing out against the veto threat, saying President Obama and Democrats supporting him are holding defense spending “hostage” in order to force the GOP to accept higher spending on domestic programs. Americans: Don’t sacrifice civil liberties to terrorism . . . The federal government’s recent actions to limit the scope of what it can do to prevent terrorism are consistent with Americans’ preference to prioritize civil liberties over anti-terrorism efforts when the two come into conflict. Sixty-five percent of Americans say the government should take steps to prevent terrorism but not violate civil liberties, while 30% think any steps to prevent terrorism are justified, even if they violate liberties. Rubio “luxury speedboat” is an average fishing boat . . . In an effort to showcase Sen. Marco Rubio’s history of financial struggles, The New York Times reported Tuesday that the Florida Republican had spent “$80,000 for a luxury speedboat” even as he faced outstanding debts. But while Rubio did indeed spend $80,000 on a boat, the vessel in question is not the glamorous “luxury speedboat” the Times article portrayed. It is, in fact, an offshore fishing boat. Politico

Netanyahu: Nobody in region believes in Iran deal . . . Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said Tuesday that while he is characterized as a “nuclear party pooper” for criticizing the Iran talks, Arab leaders in the region agree with him that the emerging agreement will not prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. China conducts drills near Taiwan, Philippines . . . Chinese warships and aircraft on Wednesday passed through the Bashi Channel between Taiwan and the Philippines to hold routine planned exercises in the Western Pacific, China’s Defense Ministry said. Wednesday’s drills could cause alarm because of their location. Reuters
One year later, Mosul safely under ISIS control . . . Iraq’s second-largest city — fell to Islamic State control exactly one year ago Wednesday and, because of weaknesses among Iraqi forces and the unexpected strength of terrorist fighters, analysts predict the Iraqis aren’t even close to reclaiming it, despite U.S. assurances that a major offensive would be underway by summertime. Europeans don’t want to defend their allies . . . As NATO faces a resurgent Russian military, a substantial number of Europeans do not believe that their own countries should rush to defend an ally against attack, according to a comprehensive survey to be made public on Wednesday. The survey is likely to send an unsettling message to Baltic members of the alliance, which have been looking for more assurances from NATO that it will protect them from Russian meddling. Escapees had inside help . . . A female prison work supervisor gave two inmates the power tools to escape from a maximum-security prison Friday in upstate New York and had planned to provide a getaway car but got cold feet, high level sources close to the case told Fox News. Fox News
Trade bill to roll Friday . . . House leaders, confident but not yet certain they have the support to pass sweeping trade legislation, are aiming to bring the package to a floor vote by the end of this week — even as they rush to resolve a last-minute hangup over how to pay for aid to displaced workers. Hastert pleads not guilty . . . After more than a week in seclusion, former House Speaker Dennis Hastert pleaded not guilty Tuesday to two criminal charges that he violated federal banking law and lied to FBI agents as they investigated his alleged agreement to pay $3.5 million in hush money to cover up a past transgression. Hundreds of Cuban criminals released in U.S. . . . Hundreds of Cuban criminals are released onto the streets of the U.S. every year because that nation won’t take them back — even though the Obama administration is trying to broker a more open relationship with the communist island nation. Texas police officer quits . . . The police officer filmed wrestling a teen to the ground at a Texas pool party resigned Tuesday, and the city’s police chief blasted his actions as “indefensible.” McKinney, Texas Chief Greg Conley told reporters at an evening briefing that Officer David Eric Casebolt, 41, was “out of control.” Casebolt resigned from the force earlier in the day, the chief confirmed. Service dog tries to save blind owner . . . A service dog threw himself in front of a mini school bus to try to protect his blind owner and stayed by her side as emergency responders tended to the injured pair, authorities said. Fox News
