Mr. Trump made his entry to his own announcement via a downward ride on an escalator inside the impressively lavish confines of Trump Tower in New York.
The media chuckled, pundits rolled their eyes, and those voters who pay attention to this kind of thing, wondered what all the fuss was about. Well, when a man with the kind of name recognition as Donald Trump decides to run for president, you can’t help but pay at least someattention to it.
The question now of course, is if a cultural icon like Donald Trump, a man equally mocked as admired, can transform his image into something enough voters would think of as suitable to be President of the United States. That will be no easy task, and yet I cannot admit to some level of admiration for how “The Donald” came out with an announcement speech that did little to hide who and what, his public image has always been in the three decades since he became so well known.
It was a speech short on details, but long on pro-American platitudes. There were so many soundbite moments I lost track shortly after the speech was started!
That’s not to say there still isn’t plenty of crazy to be found in much of what Mr. Trump said, but there is also at least as much, and possibly more, truth in his view that the United States for too long has sold the interests of its own people short. On that point I completely agree. And when he declares his intention to “make America great again”, how many of us hope that such a thing is yet still possible?
Will Donald Trump be anything politically more than a sometimes amusing, often shocking, election sideshow? It is too early to tell. What I do believe is that he is a man who has genuine concerns and frustrations for the direction America has been going for too long. He might just find himself a focal point for the growing disconnect so many voters feel toward Washington D.C. and the “business as usual” political class that dominates every major election cycle.
