Wisconsin generated a lively controversy after lawmakers amended a law that required workers in manufacturing and retail industries to take at least one 24-hour rest period in each calendar week. The change allows an exception for employees who state in writing that they are voluntarily choosing to work a seven day week. Although no changes have been proposed to a similar law requiring a ‘day of rest’ in NH, the LFDA put the issue to Facebook members, posing the question, “Should NH revise its 'day of rest' provision?”

A total of 69% of respondents answered the question directly or with a concurrence, and of these a 74% majority opposed changes to the current ‘day of rest’ law with the bill with 26% in favor. Of the remaining respondents, 6% opted to discuss the subject in broader terms while 20% commented on unrelated issues. In sum, 146 citizens participated in the discussion with a total of 429 responses.

Several of the majority opinion expressed skepticism that companies could be trusted to protect worker interests without legal obligation. “Until corporations can show that they can be humane without fear of repercussions, the only choice is having regulations,” said one respondent. Others focused on the rights of employees and noted the current law protects them. “If we eliminate the ‘day of rest’ rule, these companies will have no incentive to ever give their employees any days off,” one woman said. “People who already work ugly shifts for low wages and have to juggle multiple jobs like this will suffer the consequences.”

For those in favor of a change, many noted the matter would best be worked out between employees and employers. Remarked one gentleman, “Federal and state should stay out of it. Let the employees and the employers decide.” Others expressed the sentiment that NH simply possesses too many labor laws. “We don't need any more [laws],” said one gentleman. “People should be able to work all the hours they want and when they want to.”

For those who did not provide a direct “yes” or “no” response to the question, several expressed concern at the number of laws that exist in NH in general, while some shared their personal work experiences in retail and manufacturing. Others waxed nostalgic with one gentleman commenting, “Remembering Sunday when everything was closed.”

The nonprofit, nonpartisan LFDA takes no position on this or any issue, as this report is presented as a summary of citizen testimony. As New Hampshire’s Virtual Town Hall, the LFDA community, numbering more than 77,000, provides objective information on state issues, promotes the civil exchange of opinions, and communicates views to elected officials.
