Greece’s Syriza hardliners say they will form new party to lead anti-austerity camp – YouTube
Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has stepped down and called early elections. The decision follows rebellion in his Syriza party with members saying the recent bailout deal with the EU violated the party’s pre-election pledge to end painful austerity. Tispras also said the terms of the EU bailout deal were the best possible to get a crucial 86 billion euro package from Greece’s creditors. Following the announcement, Tsipras handed his resignation to the Greek president. The resignation is seen as an attempt to put to public vote the three-year bailout deal he negotiated with the EU. Recent polls show, Tsipras enjoys strong popular support despite his policy U-turn.
