WAM hit the streets on Canada Day 2015 to ask the people of Winnipeg what they think of Stephen Harper’s Bill C-51, the so-called anti-terror legislation that Trudeau also supports with meaningless amendments.
The bill which is now popularly known as the police state bill defines people as potential terrorists if they blockade, protest in the streets without a permit, support a revolution, support an end to the current government, etc. Bill C-51 is one of the most intrusive pieces of legislation to pass in Canada over the past decade and puts us all at risk of losing our civil liberties. With no sunset clause the bill could live on for many years ruining many lives and convicting many people who don’t deserve warrant-less raids and complete government control over their lives.
We found walking through Osborne Village in Winnipeg during the Canada Day street festival that nobody supported C-51. We asked dozens of people. Only 8 or 9 would answer on camera and all of the above said they were against the bill.
Then there were countless people who didn’t know what C-51 was at all.
We plan to do this survey again in a different place as well. The average everyday people overwhelmingly do not support Bill C-51. Despite this, there’s absolutely no promise (as in any other case) that the government’s going to listen to the people despite the fact that the people are supposed to be the government.
