Saudi-Yemeni War: An Unsurpassable Reality
The world should never be ashamed of doing the right thing. The Saudi-led war on Yemen is immoral; the world should decide on what is right and stick to it.
At a time when a staggering four in five Yemenis are in need of immediate humanitarian aid, there is no reason for the international community to sit idle while the House of Saud continues bombing the poorest nation in the Middle East – indiscriminately.
The reality is that some 1.5 million people have already been displaced by the Saudi-led aggression, while the death toll has surpassed 5,000 in just five months. The scale of human suffering is almost incomprehensible.
The civilian population is bearing the brunt of the unjustified war and unless the warmongers are forced to stop the illegal war – with no strings attached – there would be nothing left to care for:
In the country of 26 million, over 80 percent of the population, require urgent relief in the form of food, fuel, medicines, sanitation and shelter – now. The health sector is on the verge of collapse and the threat of famine looms large, with an estimated 12 million people facing critical levels of food insecurity.
This is while in a blatant disregard for human life the regime changers refuse to listen to international demands to stop the air campaign immediately. In this unjustified war of deceit, children have paid a heavy price too: Over 400 kids have lost their lives, while 600 of the estimated 22,000 wounded are children.
The non-stop – and indiscriminate – bombing of civilian areas has greatly worsened the risk of continued suffering. This includes the ports, which serve as the main entry points for shipments of humanitarian supplies to the besieged nation.
No one can know for sure the full extent of the damage. But the international civil society can’t lose a day; time is running out for Yemen’s long-suffering civilians who are already at risk of starvation, disease, and abuse. There are already some 6 million children going hungry and displaced and about 7.3 million sick and wounded kids who are not receiving any medical attention at all!
One option for the people of Yemen is to fight back. And fighting back is what they have been doing all these months. But the world also needs to play its role. They have done all that and more, but to no avail. The problem is that pro-Saud countries such as the United Sates have veto power at the UN Security Council. Washington has always used its power to veto any resolution critical to its allies, particularly Israel. With the House of Saud taking the role usually played by Israel, there is no reason to think this time it will be otherwise.
Another problem is that Riyadh is not the only actor in this conflict. The despotic regime gets all the help it can get – militarily and politically – from the United States and their partners in crime in order to continue doing what they are good at: Destroying a sovereign nation. So unless the global West stops supporting Riyadh, there will be no solution to the Saudi-Yemeni conflict.
Under the circumstances, there will be no international justice for the people of Yemen either – as the regime changers would stop that too. There is also no way forward. This might change down the road. But for the time being it is an unsurpassable – and disgraceful – reality.
