Greeks vote in general election – YouTube
Voting is underway in Greece’s snap general elections, a tight race between the ruling Syriza party and the conservative New Democracy. Former prime minister Alexis Tsipras has encouraged voters to elect a government that will fight for the rights of the Greek people.
The vote was called after Syriza lost its parliamentary majority last month. Tsipras’s popularity was dented after he clinched a new bailout deal that includes tough austerity. Many Syriza members are strongly opposed to the new austerity measures. Whoever wins Sunday’s race will have to oversee the implementation of deeply unpopular economic reforms. This is Greece’s fifth snap elections in six years as the nation is grappling with a protracted financial crisis.
