Vladimir Putin said it is necessary to put aside geopolitical ambitions and the use of terrorist groups to change governments. Speaking in Tajikistan, Putin said an international effort is required to fight the threat of terrorism and maintain global and regional security. The Russian president added that Moscow had proposed immediate formation of a broad anti-extremism coalition, which is bound to unite everyone who is ready to contribute to the fight against terrorism. He also defended Moscow’s military assistance to Syria, saying Russia will continue to provide military and technological support to the Syrian government to deter terrorist threats. Putin also made assurances that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is ready to engage sound forces of the opposition in a political process.
