This is what having a GOP majority and gutless, go-along-to-get-along leadership in the Senate gets you.

Senate Democrats on Tuesday blocked a Republican-backed bill that would crack down on so-called sanctuary cities by threatening to withhold funds to local governments that don’t cooperate with federal immigration officials.

The bill failed on a 54-45 vote. It needed 60 to advance.

The Stop Sanctuary Cities Act became a lightning rod issue ahead of the vote, as GOP sponsors tried to peel off just a few Democrats to support it while Democratic leaders blasted the legislation as counterproductive. The White House issued a formal veto threat Tuesday morning, while the chamber’s top Democrat tried to discredit the measure by calling it “The Donald Trump Act.”

But GOP backers cast the legislation as a critical first step toward reining in the exploding, and risky, practice of cities and counties ignoring federal immigration law.

The idea that cities can create no-go zones for the enforcement of US immigration laws, our own equivalent of Parisian suburbs where the national law does not run, is bizarre. It is doubly bizarre as the Supreme Court has ruled that states and municipalities have to defer to the federal government on this subject. In the words of a world famous theologian and our philosopher king:

“The National Government has significant power to regulate immigration,” Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote in the majority opinion. “Arizona may have understandable frustrations with the problems caused by illegal immigration while that process continues, but the State may not pursue policies that undermine federal law.”

This perversion of our system of laws was brought home when Katie Steinle was gunned down by a five-time deported illegal alien felon sheltering in the sanctuary city of San Francisco. Two Republicans did not vote for the bill and neither of them were Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) 92%: Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) 44%, who was presumably off squandering the money some chumps gave him to run for president, and Sen. Mark Kirk (R-IL) 16% who voted with the Democrats.

sanctuary vote

This type of vote shows why the weak sisters we are perpetually conned into supporting are more of a danger than an asset. Kirk is pooping his drawers at the thought of his upcoming reelection campaign. As a result he has become a voracious, conscienceless PanderBear (not to be confused with a PedoBear) who essentially acts an another Democrat senator. Kirk doesn’t realize that to win elections that someone has to vote for him and right now Republicans have no reason to do so. He also needs to realize that Democrat voters will vote for the real Democrat over the fake Democrat every time.
