SA – An open participation of Russia in the war in Syria brings about a qualitative change in the geopolitical situation in the region. What geopolitical risks do you see?
RI – While in Syria, as other conflict regions, we see a confrontation between Russia and the United States (even if it looks like a fight with local bandit radicals), all of geopolitical risks have been there for about fifteen years (when Washington began to meddle into the sphere of Russia’s vital interests). At the moment we can talk only about the minimization of geopolitical risks because the fact of the beginning of the campaign in Syrian by the Russian army shows a significant increase in political, diplomatic and military potential of Moscow and the stability of the Russian financial and economic system. This means that the balance of power for the past decade and a half has not changed in favor of the US. If we bear in mind the dynamics of the process (in the last five years the strengthening of Russia was taking place at an increasing rate with the weakening of the US), it is safe to say that in the fields of Syria we see a change of the global leader.

………….The situation in Syria has cleared in that the former thousands of “rebel” groups using guerrilla tactics are now down to two or three major actors and mostly conventional fighting. This can be countered by conventional means with massive and wide ranging operations.
The Russians are one of the few masters of this style (having learned it from the German operations against them). If they take the lead in planning and commanding this I am quite confident that substantial results will be achieved.
Hizbullah cleared the western front of mercenaries and Wahhabis. Russian diplomacy quieted the southern front. Now the push comes to clear the north. It will take a while. Then the east, where the Islamic State rules with few capabilities but propaganda, will be cleaned up with little effort. Syria may become whole again.

It has been reported that as a result of the impact of a Russian airstrike in the province of Homs, a group of militants were eliminated from the terrorist group “Ahrar al-Sham.” In the spring of 2015 they participated in the seizure of the city in northwestern Syria.
The leader of the terrorist group “Ahrar al-Sham”, a native of Chechnya, Abu Bakr al-Shishani was allegedly killed in the Syrian province of Homs as a result of air strikes, a Syrian military source told RIA Novosti on Thursday.
“On October 14, as a result of the impact by the Russian airstrike in the province of Homs, the militant group Ahrar al-Sham together with the leader, a native of Chechnya, Abu Bakr Al-Shishani, was eliminated” – said the agency. Earlier, the Syrian National Agency SANA reported the death of the “Ahrar al-Sham” leader Sheikh Omar Mustafa Al-Khodr, and his right hand man Khalid Abu Anas.
“Ahrar al-Sham” is the biggest terrorist group in the “Dzheish al-Fath” after “Dzhabhat en Nusra”. In the spring of 2015 “Ahrar al-Sham” participated in the capture of Erich, Idlib and Jisr al-Shugurov in northwest Syria. During the capture of the city, militants carried out mass executions of local people.

Russian warplanes have destroyed a surface-to-air missile launcher that the ISIL terrorist group previously captured from the Syrian Army, the Russian Defense Ministry reports.
The bombing campaign in Syria is forcing the Takfiri terrorists to flee, RT reported quoting top Russian army generals.
The 9K33 Osa short-range air defense launcher was destroyed by a Sukhoi Su-34 bomber in Eastern Douma near Damascus, ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov told the media in his Thursday daily briefing.
The Su-34 dropped a precision anti-fortification bomb KAB-500 at a concrete shelter, where the launcher was hidden, destroying both the weapon and the building, he added.
Osa, which is called Gecko by NATO, is a highly-mobile launcher equipped with six short-range surface-to-air missiles meant to provide tactical cover from enemy aircraft to ground troops.
The launcher was destroyed during one of 33 combat missions that Russia conducted in Syria over the day. A total of 32 targets in the provinces Idlib, Hama, Damascus, Aleppo and Deir Ezzur were hit, Konashenkov said.
The general added that terrorist fighters appear to be abandoning their positions and are pulling back.
“The militants are retreating, trying to establish new positioning areas and changing their supply system,” he said, adding that Russia has intensified reconnaissance sorties to monitor the situation on the ground.

Security Official: Massive Operations Underway to Surround ISIL in Iraq, Syria
A senior security official announced beginning of massive operations in Iraq and Syria to cripple the ISIL terrorist group in the two war-hit countries.
“The biggest operation to besiege the Takfiri ISIL terrorist group have started in Syria, which is first of a kind in Syria,” a senior Iraqi security official told FNA on Thursday.
He underlined that the operations are expected to exert heavy pressure on the ISIL terrorists.
Noting that the main operations will be staged in Iraq’s al-Anbar province and Syria’s Raqa and countryside of Idlib provinces, he said, “The operations will be conducted through information coordination and intelligence sharing in the joint operations room which includes representatives of Iraq, Syria, Iran and Russia.”
In relevant remarks on Wednesday, Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan stressed that the country’s military experts and advisors are taking preparatory actions that will end up in the complete annihilation of the Takfiri groups, including the ISIL terrorists, in Syria.
Dehqan made the remarks in a ceremony in Tehran to commemorate martyrdom of IRGC Commander Brigadier General Hossein Hamadani, who was killed in Northern Syria last Thursday.
He referred to the new joint operations plan of Iran, Syria, Iraq and Russia to destroy the ISIL, and said, “At present, we are witnessing start of new developments in Syria, thanks to the efforts and measures adopted by martyr Hamadani.”
“God willing, these developments will pave the ground for the full annihilation of the Takfiri groups,” Dehqan said.
General Hamadani was killed in Northern Syria last Thursday, while providing military counseling services to the Syrian forces in their fight against the Takfiri terrorists.
“Brigadier General Hamadani was martyred during an attack by the ISIL Takfiri terrorists in the outskirts of the city of Aleppo while fulfilling his duty as military advisor and defending the holy Shiite shrines in the country,” the IRGC said in a statement on Friday.
General Hamadani was in Syria to render military advice to the Syrian army and popular forces in their fight against the ISIL terrorists in the Arab country.
In relevant remarks on Monday, Commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps Major General Mohammad Ali Jafari underlined that the terrorist groups in Syria will sustain great losses in coming days.
“We will witness great victories in Syria in the next few days,” Jafari said.
Noting that the security of Western Asia, including Iran, is dependent on Syria and the resistance front, he said, “We should support this front with all our power.”
Jafari also warned that the “arrogant powers in the region are after overthrowing the ruling system in Syria to extend their influence in the Muslim states”.
