There were no craters because they were air bursts, designed to impact a wide area with a little force, rather than a small area with more.
The planes were not diving when they released the bombs. They were at altitude and climbing. As soon as they released the bombs, they turned around to get clear. (If they had remained on course, the bombs would have gone off under them and killed them.)
