The GOP Establishment Is Trying To Elect Donald Trump?
Panic is a very ugly thing. It is a triumph of primal fear over the intellect. It is when “flight” kicks “fight’s” ass. In pre-gunpowder days, armies would hammer away at each other for hours with few losses. Then panic would set in bringing slaughter with it. It is demeaning. It is unmanly. Unfortunately, panic is one of the two modes favored by the GOP establishment. The other is submissive urination, which, though closely akin to panic, tends to not harm innocent bystanders. Less than three months before the kickoff Iowa caucuses, there is growing anxiety bordering on panic among Republican elites about the dominance and durability of Donald Trump and Ben Carson and widespread bewilderment over how to defeat them.
Party leaders and donors fear that nominating either man would have negative ramifications for the GOP ticket up and down the ballot, virtually ensuring a Hillary Rodham Clinton presidency and increasing the odds that the Senate falls into Democratic hands.
The party establishment is paralyzed. Big money is still on the sidelines. No consensus alternative to the outsiders has emerged from the pack of governors and senators running, and there is disagreement about how to prosecute the case against them. Recent focus groups of Trump supporters in Iowa and New Hampshire commissioned by rival campaigns revealed no silver bullet.
Two things happened over the past week that underscore the extent to which panic,particularly Trump-panic, has become a complete obsession of the GOP establishment. A few days ago the Wall Street Journal ran a piece titled: GOP Operative Plans ‘Guerrilla Campaign’ Against Donald Trump.
The Republican establishment, increasingly alarmed by the enduring strength of Donald Trump’s presidential bid, is ratcheting up efforts to knock him out of the race, including the first attempt to unite donors from rival camps into a single anti-Trump force.
A well-connected GOP operative is planning a “guerrilla campaign” backed by secret donors to “defeat and destroy” the celebrity businessman’s candidacy, according to a memo reviewed by The Wall Street Journal.
This group, yesterday, attacked Trump for hypocrisy after he spoke in Michigan about the need to protect US auto manufacturing jobs:
So Donald Trump is doing his part to shore up the US auto manufacturing industry, yes? Well, no, actually… Trump owns a Mercedes, a Lamborghini and at least one Rolls-Royce. Not, it appears, a Ford. Or a Cadillac.
Maybe instead of supporting policy that raises prices on goods including cars for American consumers, supporting the auto bailout, and proposing moving Big 3 automaker jobs out of Michigan to other states to “lower wage costs” even though that would not, in fact, lower wage costs because of UAW contracts (something you’d think Trump might be aware of as a businessman), Trump should try putting his money where is mouth is and buying a few American cars. Even if his wealth is the $4 billion Forbes says, rather than the $10 billion Trump claims, he can probably afford a few Ford Focuses every year.
I am not a YUGE Trump fan, but this kind of sophomoric attack just makes my teeth bleed with frustration. The era of “American made” cars is long past. Most American Mercedes are produced in Alabama. Most American BMWs come from Spartanburg, SC. The great majority of Volkswagens are produced in the United States. More Hondas are made in the US than in the rest of the world combined. And the Cadillac SRX and many of the Ford Fiestas and Fusions are made in Mexico. Is this the best they have?
No. They have even more flopsweat:
A former chairman of the New Hampshire Republican Party wants Donald Trump off the state’s GOP presidential primary ballot.
Fergus Cullen filed a formal complaint Monday challenging Trump’s eligibility to appear on the ballot as a Republican due to his “inconsistent views” and “his purpose to sabotage the Republican Party.”
“It is my belief that Mr. Trump must present evidence that he is a registered member of the Republican Party because his views, expressed over decades, are inconsistent with the Republican Party platform and the Republican Party of New Hampshire’s statement of principles and bylaws,” Cullen wrote in a 6 page manifesto outlining every one of what he says are Trump’s flip-flops dating back to 1999.
On Tuesday, New Hampshire’s five-member Ballot Law Commission will convene to rule on the “questions of eligibility” and determine whether Cullen’s claims are legitimate.
Seriously? Flip-flops can get your thrown off the ballot? Does this rule apply to Kasich? or Bush? or Rubio?
Can you think of better tactics to make Trump supporters really dig in (and maybe sit out 2016 if their guy loses) than have GOP apparatchiks announce they are trying to stop him and some GOP party toad tries to get him thrown off the ballot? Can you think of a better way to turn luke-warm Trump supporters into broken-glass supporters? If I was Donald Trump I would have created Trump Card LLC myself and I would have hired this clown in New Hampshire to challenge my ballot access with exactly that argument.
The reason that voters, in large numbers, are attracted to Trump (in particular) and Carson while they are ignoring Bush and Kasich is simple. The GOP Establishment is corrupt to the core. Though it talks free enterprise, etc. etc., the big GOP donors, like the US Chamber of Commerce, are first to fill the trough and to use the power of the government to cripple their competitors. We all saw in Mississippi how the GOP will say anything and do anything to defeat someone they see as a threat to their rent-seeking.
The Trump problem is a problem the GOP has created by its lies and double-dealing. And, given its track record of f***ing up pretty much everything it touches, it looks like it will hand the nomination to Trump.
