Yemen SITREP October 31st, 2015 by John Rambo

Yemen:

• Yemen has never been a stable country, even prior to the Arab Spring.

• Currently the war is between the Houthis (supported by Iran) in the north against Hadi-loyalists (supported by Saudi-Arabia and co.) in the south and ISIL/AQAP in the east.

• The Arab Spring allowed Houthi Shias in the north of Yemen to mobilize just like the rest of the region.

• Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) has always been active in Yemen. The attack on the USS Cole was by the Yemeni based Al-Qaeda. [Source]

• The Houthis have been fighting for some time, perhaps over a decade [Source]

• The lack of a coordinated government military has allowed Al-Qaeda to expand unhindered in the country.

• Things began to escalate much faster when the Houthis in a power grab captured Sana’a, the capital of Yemen and placing the president (Hadi at the time) under house arrest. [Source]

• Hadi managed to escape a month later to Aden, establishing it as a temporary capital and asking Saudi-Arabia to increase its support against the Houthis.

• ISIL has been spotted in Yemen. ISIL is hostile to both Houthi and Hadi loyalists (although when things were chummy with Saudi Arabia it only said it was going to fight the Shia Houthis). [Source]

• Saudi-Arabia is leading a coalition comprising of nine Arab League states (Egypt, Morocco, Jordan, Sudan, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain and Somalia) against the Houthis in Yemen.

• Iran did seize on the Houthi mobilization, being Shia and so close to Saudi Arabia, to open up a fourth front in the Iran-Saudi Arabia proxy wars, the other three being Lebanon, Syria and Iraq. [Source]

• Iran has provided trainers and advisors in small numbers which has help the Houthis augment their tactics in guerrilla mountain warfare.

• The territory shared between Saudi-Arabia and Yemen where the Houthis reside is a desert mountainous area making it perfect for guerilla warfare.

• The Houthis have been able to inflict heavy causalities on Saudi ground forces [Source]

• Saudi-Arabia and friends have been consistently bombing targets inside Yemen. The country is approaching collapse.

• The US has primarily kept quiet about the Yemen campaign, Saudi Arabia along with Israel receive this cover when it comes to civilian massacres, which is what Yemen is right now.

• This is not the first time an Arab power has been deployed on the ground and in the air over Yemen; back then however David Sterling (founder of the British SAS) was running the show against the Egyptians [Source]

• Houthi forces, with probable technical assistance from Iranian advisors or Yemeni Republican Guard forces, have fired SCUDS into Saudi Arabia bringing the conflict to a new level of severity. [Source]

• Cross border raids have been common between both Saudi Arabia and Houthi fighters [Source]

• Although hard to confirm but it seems that the Houthis have also fired two anti-ship missiles at Saudi vessels, sinking one. [Source]

• The old Yemeni Republican Guard, one of the better trained units in Yemen, have sided with the Houthis as many are in support of the old president Saleh.

• Saleh was supposed to step down in favor of Hadi in 2011. This agreement was brokered by Saudi Arabia. Saleh refused to sign the papers at the last minute. Just over a week later bombs are set off in a mosque where he and members of his government were praying. Saleh survived with burns on 40% of his body after extensive treatment in Saudi Arabia. Saleh signed the agreement months later [Source]

• It’s unsure who committed the bombings of the mosque but fingers have pointed to Saudi intelligence as well as the Houthis.

• Saleh, as ex-president of Yemen, has pledged his allegiance to the Houthis after the Arab Coalition struck his residence feeling he has been abandoned by the Arab League [Source]

• Iran, under the guise of anti-piracy exercises, have managed to deploy a small number of heavy weapons, IRGC advisors (perhaps 10-12 men at most), and lots of hard US cash. [Source]

• Humanitarian vessels continuously provide the people of Yemen with aid, a significant number have been sent by Iran. [Source]

• Right now Qatar and the UAE are shuttling in ISIL fighters into Yemen, getting them out of Syria and from Russian air strikes. [Source]

• It could be a strategy to try to grind up these fanatics against the Houthis, getting rid of two problems.

• ISIL currently outshines AQAP and it won’t be long before it steals more and more AQAP members. ISIL has an allure to jihadists of other factions. [Source]

• Al-Shahaab (Somalian Al-Qaeda) has deployed fighters into Yemen to fight alongside AQAP for more than five years. [Source]

S. Arabia Renders Control of Aden to ISIL

S. Arabia Renders Control of Aden to ISIL

Sources in Yemen disclosed on Sunday that Riyadh has transferred control over Yemen’s strategic Southern port city of Aden to its sponsored Takfiri terrorist groups, mainly ISIL.

Sources in Southern Yemen’s Protest Campaign revealed deployment of armed Takfiris in different parts of Aden and their Saudi-backed move to control the military and security headquarters.

A number of Southern Yemen’s Protest Campaign leaders told Al-Mayadeen news channel that Saudi Arabia supports the ISIL-affiliated terrorists in Aden financially and logistically to deploy their forces in different parts of the city based on an agreement made after secret meetings between commanders of the Saudi-led coalition and Takfiri leaders last week.

Based on the report, the situation in the Southern province of Taiz is not much different from Aden and Saudi Arabia is supporting the Takfiris in that region too to persuade them to fight alongside the forces loyal to Mansour Hadi, the fugitive Yemeni president.

Earlier reports in September also said that Saudi Arabia had promised to pay $1mln to its mercenaries in Yemen if they conquer the entire province of Aden.

“The militias of (fugitive president) Mansour Hadi who are supported by the al-Saud have forced the residents of Aden to leave the city through their terrorist attacks,” the preacher of Aden’s main mosque told FNA.

The preacher added that the attacks are the result of Riyadh’s promise that “if its mercenaries in Aden win full control over the province, they will be paid a one-million-dollar reward”.

Also, Last month, local sources revealed that the Saudi-led forces fighting against the Yemeni government had hired foreign mercenaries, specially Sudanese soldiers, after they were badly defeated in the Southern port of Aden.

“Soldiers of the Sudanese army along with their vehicles were seen moving in several areas across the Southern province of Aden,” the Arabic-language Al-Manar TV quoted local sources as saying.

The sources reiterated that the move comes after heavy losses were inflicted upon the Emirati forces operating in Yemen as part of the Saudi-led coalition.

But senior Yemeni revolution leaders underlined their determination to regain control of Aden province from the al-Qaeda and pro-Hadi forces.

“Despite the fact that we have withdrawn from Aden, we are still present there and all terrorist, Saudi coalition and pro-Hadi forces are within the range of our weapons,” Nayef Qayes, the deputy head of Yemen’s revolution council, told FNA early October.

He underscored that the Yemeni revolutionary and popular forces will return to Aden soon to regain their territories from the foreign occupiers and enemies.

Also representative of Ansarullah resistance group in Yemen peace talks, Abdolrahman Mokhtar, announced that the revolutionary forces have held captive several Saudi and foreign nationals who were fighting against the Yemeni people.

Yemeni Forces Shoot Down Two Saudi Spy Aircraft in Saa’da Province

The Yemeni army and popular forces shot down two spying aircraft of the Saudi-led coalition forces as they were running reconnaissance missions in two different parts of the province of Saa’da.

The Saudi-led coalition plane was targeted by the Yemeni army while flying over Sahar region in Saa’da province on Saturday.

Meantime, a separate report said that the Yemeni popular forces have also downed a spying drone in al-Zaher region.

No other details have been released on either incident yet.

Also on Thursday, a Saudi military plane used for airdropping arms cargoes for the terrorists and Saudi troops was shot down in the province of Ta’iz.

The Saudi-led coalition’s logistics plane was hit while flying over the mountainous area of Sabr in Ta’iz province.

In the past 7 months tens of drones and fighter jets of the Saudi-led coalition have been shot down by the army and popular forces in different Yemeni provinces, including Saa’da, Ma’rib, Jizan, Dhamar and Sana’a.

On October 16, the Yemeni army and popular forces hit a strategic military air base in Asir province in Southern Saudi Arabia with Scud missiles, killing tens of high-ranking Saudi officers and commanders and destroying over two dozen F-15 fighter jets and Apache helicopters.

At least 66 high-ranking Saudi army officers, including two senior commanders, were killed when the Yemeni missiles hit Khamis Mushait air base in Asir province in retaliation for the kingdom’s aggression against their nation.

The Yemeni forces also destroyed 17 F-15 fighter planes and 9 Apache helicopters.

The Yemeni forces also shot down a Saudi fighter jet in the Northeastern parts of the country in March.

The Yemeni air defense system hit the warplane in Hoor region in Marib province in Northeastern part of Sana’a.

Earlier in March, a Saudi F-15 fighter jet crashed in the Gulf of Aden as the Kingdom’s offensive against Yemen continued.

Saudi Arabia has been striking Yemen for 221 days now to restore power to fugitive president Mansour Hadi, a close ally of Riyadh. The Saudi-led aggression has so far killed at least 6,914 Yemenis, including hundreds of women and children.

Hadi stepped down in January and refused to reconsider the decision despite calls by Ansarullah revolutionaries of the Houthi movement.

Despite Riyadh’s claims that it is bombing the positions of the Ansarullah fighters, Saudi warplanes are flattening residential areas and civilian infrastructures.
