Archie the Bear, Center of Ohio Dept. of Agriculture Battle With Lodi Family, Dies at Home By Lori Price, www.legitgov.org | 18 Dec 2015 | A rescued brown bear, who lived happily with his “parents,” Debbie and Jeff Gillium, died Thursday evening at home. Archie, 41, was the center of an online and court battle over his ownership status with the Ohio Department of Agriculture. Gillium family friend, Bryan Baker, posted the sad announcement of Arhcie's passing on Facebook. “Archie has passed away peacefully,” Mr. Baker posted Friday, with a photo of Archie. Mr. Baker added that “he just died in his sleep last night.” Below is a news summary posted by CLG, detailing the court struggle between the Gilliums and the Ohio Department of Agriculture.
Archie the bear's owners, of Lodi, heading to court to keep him | 06 Feb 2015 | Archie the bear won't have to be removed from his home — for now at least. His owners, Debbie and Jeff Gillium, of Lodi, have filed a temporary restraining order against the Ohio Department of Agriculture Agriterrorists in Medina County Common Pleas Court. “We have an understanding with the state of Ohio that everything is going to sit tight,” attorney John Oberholtzer, who is representing the Gilliums, said. Oberholtzer said a hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday before Common Pleas Judge Christopher J. Collier. The state had threatened to remove the bear by Monday.
