Criticize Cruz for Surgeon General vote, confirm anti-1A Attorney General
Attorney General Loretta Lynch is out there ready to prosecute people in the name of being politically correct. She wants to protect Muslims in America from “hate speech” and is saying she will prosecute, should the need arise. Despite what Media Matters says, there isn’t really any way to interpret this as anything other than attempting to police speech:
Attorney General Loretta Lynch on Thursday warned that the Justice Department could take aggressive action against people whose anti-Muslim rhetoric “edges towards violence” and told the Muslim community that “we stand with you in this.”
Noting the rise in violence against Muslims and mosques in the wake of the Paris attacks, Lynch added that, “When we talk about the First amendment we [must] make it clear that actions predicated on violent talk are not American. They are not who we are, they are not what we do, and they will be prosecuted.”
Republicans are understandably upset at the Attorney General’s words, and the fact of the matter is that this administration, at every level, is taking political correctness to an extreme, now including an attempt to abridge free speech and circumvent the First Amendment. It would be funny, were it no so worrying, that saying something mean about someone would land you in deep, deep trouble with the federal government.
Republicans have a number of Democrats to blame for Lynch getting to where she is at this time – however, she cleared the hurdle during the early part of the Republican majority in the Senate. Ten GOP Senators crossed party lines to confirm her, too, including Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) 52%, Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) 28%, Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) 41%, Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) 69%, and Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) 18%.
Remember when foolishly criticized Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) 100% for “making it possible” for Senate Democrats to confirm a hyperpartisan Surgeon General? As my colleague Streiff said back in December:
The story being pushed is this, that Cruz and Lee pushing for their vote on the Constitutionality of Obama’s amnesty directive resulted in boodles of Obama nominees being confirmed. To believe this claim three things have to occur:
- You have to believe Harry Reid was going to let the nominations lapse and put them in the hands of the next, Republican controlled, Senate.
- You have to believe Harry Reid and his staff have never heard of a calendar.
- You have to be an idiot (this, you’ll find, makes it much easier to believe what the GOP leadership in the House and Senate are selling).
The nominations were going to be voted on
With Reid’s enactment of the “nuclear option” the possibility of filibustering these nominees was off the table. As the Democrats have a majority in the Senate it is pretty obvious that, absent a procedural coup which is impossible as the scheduling and rule making apparatus is in Reid’s hands, the nominees were going to be approved.
Again, who are the Republicans that said all the nasty things about Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) 100%? You can find them in this article from POLITICO, but I’ll make it easy for you: Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) 52%, Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) 28%, Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) 41%, Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) 69%, and Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) 18%.
That’s right, the very same people who allowed an Attorney General, one who wants to prosecute people for saying mean things about Muslims, to be confirmed shouted and whined and moaned about Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) 100% making them work on a Saturday and have to deal with nomination votes they could have held off on until Monday. The very same GOP Senators who have time and again caved to the Democrats are the ones that allowed Loretta Lynch to happen under a Republican Majority in the Senate.
