The Spanish prime minister is set to meet the leader of the Socialist Party in an attempt to form a coalition government. His Popular Party has won Sunday’s general elections, but fell short of an absolute majority to form a cabinet.
According to a statement released by Mariano Rajoy’s office, the prime minister will meet Pedro Sanchez to begin negotiations later Wednesday. The ruling conservatives have won 121 seats and the Socialists Party came in second with 92 seats in the 350-seat assembly. The new anti-austerity Podemos came into third place. The rise of Podemos and other leftist parties ended the era of two-party rule in Spain.
