Spain’s Podemos rules out help for PM Rajoy to govern – YouTube
A week after the inconclusive parliamentary elections in Spain, all efforts by Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy seem to be hitting a brick wall. The leaders of rival parties say they will not support him for a new term in office.
Rivera whose center-right party won nearly 12 percent of the December 20 elections, made the remarks after a meeting with Rajoy in Madrid. He also voiced his opposition to the independence of Catalonia, saying that no government will support any formula that would break Spain’s national sovereignty. Earlier in the day, the leader of rising Podemos party also said his party will not allow the conservative People’s Party to rule for another term.
Pablo Iglesias also had a meeting with acting Prime Minister Rajoy on Monday. He made it clear to the reporters that Podemos does not want to play politics. According to the Podemos leader, the new lawmakers have decided to reduce their salaries. The ruling People’s party, which has won only 29 percent of the vote, has yet to patch up a new cabinet. If Rajoy fails to form a coalition government with other parties, new elections will be called in Spain within two months.
