Fellow American,
We all remember where we were when the planes went into the Twin Towers. We all remember where we were when the towers came down.
I was home from school sick and I remember watching it all live on television.
Some of you reading this were among the first responders. While everyone ran away from the towering infernos, you ran towards them.
To the 9/11 first responders, I say to you that a grateful nation will never be able to repay the sacrifices you made. Nothing will mend the heartbreak. Nothing will heal the wounds, both physical and mental.
But we can try. And that starts with making sure that the fund to pay for 9/11 first responders' medical care is renewed immediately!
The legislation to renew the 9/11 first responder healthcare fund passed the House of Representatives easily.
When it reached Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s desk, it couldn’t have come at a better time.
With just a signature, McConnell could have attached the legislation as an amendment to the must-pass highway funding bill. It would have been voted on, passed, and on its way to the President’s desk.
But that isn’t what happened. Mitch McConnell decided not to vote on the renewal legislation immediately. He is kicking it down the road.
For the September 11th responders struggling with rare cancers from breathing in the dust and debris, “not yet” isn’t good enough.
None of these brave men and women said “not yet” when they were called into the burning buildings or smoldering rubble piles. They went in without the slightest hesitation.
And today, they’re paying the price for their selflessness.
How DARE anyone in Congress delay this vote? How dare they?
I don’t really care what the reasoning is. This is a no-brainer. We owe these men and women an enormous debt and the least we can do – the absolute least we can do – is make sure their medical care is paid for!
What are they waiting for? Tell Congress to renew our 9/11 responders’ healthcare right now!
It’s simple: renew the program. Help save these first responders’ lives. Help increase their quality of life. Give the families the much-needed financial help that they have earned!
It’s amazing that Congress is treating this like a non-issue. This isn’t something you can just put off until later.
Never did I ever think that we would need to demand that Congress passes this bill.
But unfortunately, that is exactly what we need to do. Unfortunately, Congress seems content with just putting it off.
No way!
Sincerely,
Max McGuire
