Debbie Wasserman Schultz Says Ted Cruz Is a Natural Born Citizen. Why Won’t Reince Priebus?
Yesterday, Leon posted on the epic gutlessness of RNC Chairman Reince Priebus to say that Ted Cruz is a natural born citizen as understood under the 14th Amendment. In response to a media question, Priebus said:
Listen, I don’t get involved. I’m not going to get in the middle of all these candidate issues. It’s a bad place for me to be. I’ll let all these folks argue about this stuff, and I’m going to stay out of it.
This is stunning when you think about it. The head of the RNC won’t even say that one of the two leading contenders for the GOP nomination is qualified to be president.
For all of her faults, and they are legion — in fact, I am struggling to think of her good qualities — Debbie Wasserman Schults, the chairman of the DNC can answer the question.
Cruz’s conservative positions on social issues and the role of government, issues such as health care, and bellicose rhetoric on foreign affairs make him anathema to Wasserman Schultz, who is a Democratic congresswoman from Weston in addition to her role as Democratic party chairwoman.
But, she said in response to a reporter’s question Monday at an unrelated event in Weston, she has no doubt that Cruz is legally eligible to serve.
“No, I have no doubt. Senator Cruz is a natural born citizen by virtue of the 14th Amendment to the United States Constitution,” Wasserman Schultz said.
This is a striking case of candor.
The easy thing for her to do would be to troll the GOP by expressing doubt — just like Reince Priebus. After all, one of her own, the deranged Alan Grayson, is filing a lawsuit challenging Cruz’s ability to run for president and her statement undercuts him. It would keep the pot boiling and create some amusement in a lot of circles. I don’t think Wasserman Schultz is so out of touch that she hasn’t read recent polls which show that Ted Cruz beats Hillary very handily in a head-to-head match up. It isn’t like helping Cruz is helping her interests.
It is really a shame when Wasserman Schultz shows more class and dignity than the RNC chair.
