On Friday, Donald Trump held a rally at Rock Hill, South Carolina. During that rally, a woman wearing a hijab… sort of like a burqu but showing more skin… was seated in the stands directly behind Trump. As he was speaking he suggested that ISIS terrorists were mixed in the refugee stream coming out of camps in Turkey. When he did so she stood in protest. Security escorted her out.

The only reason I’m posting on this is because the general coverage of the event is calculated to leave the impression that we should be outraged over this, though I’m not sure why.

On the merits, Trump’s security people were exactly right to toss her out and, by all accounts, they did so respectfully. And on the way out, the woman was, unsurprisingly, heckled.

She might have been silent but she was attempting to disrupt a candidate’s event… one, it might be added, that his campaign footed the bill for…and use his venue for her own purposes. Moreover, she actually served to make the case that a lot of believe needs to be made against Muslim immigration. There is no logical reason that people should have to rely on a woman wearing Middle Eastern garb that symbolizes the oppression and second-class status of women as a way of recognizing Muslims. The fact that Muslims believe they are entitled to some special dispensation from culturally assimilating into the fabric of the nation that has invited them in calls into question the extent to which they will ever be more than citizens of convenience.

And, naturally, wherever you find a Muslim making an ass of themselves, whether in a Trump rally or in San Bernardino, you find the organization that has been branded a terrorist sponsor in some parts of the Middle East: CAIR.

“The image of a Muslim woman being abused and ejected from a political rally sends a chilling message to American Muslims and to all those who value our nation’s traditions of religious diversity and civic participation,” CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad said in a statement. “Donald Trump should issue a public apology to the Muslim woman kicked out of his rally and make a clear statement that American Muslims are welcome as fellow citizens and as participants in the nation’s political process.”

This is ridiculous. The woman wasn’t “abused.” The heckling of her as she was escorted out was well within the realm of the “civic participation” that this Awad creature extols. The woman wearing the bedsheets had no entitlement to both disrupt a campaign event and to be free from criticism. The nation doesn’t have a tradition of religious diversity. We have a recent history of mutual tolerance between Christian denominations. Why does this asshat think the Mormons ended up in Utah? Muslims are welcome to take part in the political process. As “Rosa” is hardly a traditional Muslim name for a woman, we can assume she was an American convert. She will be able to vote. She was welcome to attend Trump’s rally. But participation does not imply that you get your way. That is a lesson that American Muslims of the CAIR variety need to learn.
