Main-stream media reports the beginning of the end for the Second Amendment
Broadcast on channel 4 news here in the UK tonight was a report that President Obama is set to use his Executive Powers to bypass Congress and enact legislation that will dramatically curb private gun ownership.
The new legislation is set to be announced imminently according to Whitehouse sources.
President Obama is meeting with the US Attorney General on Monday to discuss options and strategy.
The NRA has responded by saying that the President is defying the will of the people and any new legislation would be vigorously contested.
At his inauguration, the newly sworn-in President has to announce to the nation that he will protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, which includes all amendments. In his final year in office, Obama is in danger of compromising his legacy by failing to uphold that promise.
The primary argument for Federal gun control, beyond what the USA presently has, is the stated desire to reduce gun violence and prevent mass shootings.
What is missing from this policy objective are:
1) The number of violent incidents that are defused by potential victims and intercessors who use their armed status to deter a violent predator.
2) The number of deaths caused by stabbings, blunt-force trauma and other non gun-related murders and violence. Clearly indicating that guns are not the problem.
3) Mass shootings; where a replay of the incident clearly demonstrates that many lives could have been saved had civilians been granted concealed carry rights.
There has been no statement from the White House, from gun-control-advocates or even the President himself to address these facts.
It should also be noted that Countries, within the United Nations (UN), who promote gun control measures include some of the most repressive nations on Earth.
The right for civilians to bear arms for the purposes of Self Defense is probably the most fundamental symbol of liberty and freedom that can ever be expressed. If US citizens lose this, they lose their democracy, they lose their personal safety and they will lose any pretense that their Country is the best in the world.
