Obama Signs 23 Gun Control Executive Orders
As expected, Obama held his big press conference this afternoon and announced that he was signing almost two dozen executive orders on gun control:
“WASHINGTON — As tears streamed down his face, President Obama on Tuesday condemned the repeated spasms of gun violence across America as he announced new executive actions intended to reduce the number of mass shootings, suicides and killings that have become routine in the nation’s communities.
Speaking in the East Room of the White House surrounded by gun control activists and the families of gun victims, Mr. Obama broke down as he spoke about the young children shot to death in 2012 at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut. …”
Here’s a breakdown of all the 23 executive orders Obama issued on gun control:
1. Issue a Presidential Memorandum to require federal agencies to make relevant data available to the federal background check system.
2. Address unnecessary legal barriers, particularly relating to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, that may prevent states from making information available to the background check system.
3. Improve incentives for states to share information with the background check system.
4. Direct the Attorney General to review categories of individuals prohibited from having a gun to make sure dangerous people are not slipping through the cracks.
5. Propose rulemaking to give law enforcement the ability to run a full background check on an individual before returning a seized gun.
6. Publish a letter from ATF to federally licensed gun dealers providing guidance on how to run background checks for private sellers.
7. Launch a national safe and responsible gun ownership campaign.
8. Review safety standards for gun locks and gun safes (Consumer Product Safety Commission).
9. Issue a Presidential Memorandum to require federal law enforcement to trace guns recovered in criminal investigations.
10. Release a DOJ report analyzing information on lost and stolen guns and make it widely available to law enforcement.
11. Nominate an ATF director.
12. Provide law enforcement, first responders, and school officials with proper training for active shooter situations.
13. Maximize enforcement efforts to prevent gun violence and prosecute gun crime.
14. Issue a Presidential Memorandum directing the Centers for Disease Control to research the causes and prevention of gun violence.
15. Direct the Attorney General to issue a report on the availability and most effectiveuse of new gun safety technologies and challenge the private sector to developinnovative technologies.
16. Clarify that the Affordable Care Act does not prohibit doctors asking their patients about guns in their homes.
17. Release a letter to health care providers clarifying that no federal law prohibits them from reporting threats of violence to law enforcement authorities.
18. Provide incentives for schools to hire school resource officers.
19. Develop model emergency response plans for schools, houses of worship and institutions of higher education.
20. Release a letter to state health officials clarifying the scope of mental health services that Medicaid plans must cover.
21. Finalize regulations clarifying essential health benefits and parity requirements within ACA exchanges.
22. Commit to finalizing mental health parity regulations.23. Launch a national dialogue led by Secretaries Sebelius and Duncan on mental health
I don’t see how any of this would have prevented any of the recent mass shootings.
Among recent psychopaths, Dylann Roof legally bought a gun and passed a background check because the FBI screwed up, Adam Lanza was too young to legally purchase the guns used in Sandy Hook which were all legally purchased by his mom, Vester Flanagan II (aka Bryce Williams) passed a background check and legally purchased his guns, the guns used by Virginia Tech shooter Seung-Hui Cho were legally purchased, the guns used by the San Bernardino shooters were legally purchased, and all the guns used by the Umpqua shooter, the Satanist Chris Harper-Mercer, were also legally purchased.
Even the New York Times shows some skepticism of the panacea that is universal background checks. There is an interactive feature over there that acknowledges that the guns used by Rusty Houser, James Holmes, Aaron Alexis, Wade Michael Page, Jared Loughner, and Major Nidal Hasan all used firearms that had been legally purchased. As a convicted felon, Glenn Miller couldn’t legally purchase a gun, but evaded gun control laws by finding someone else to buy him the shotgun he used in Overland Park. James von Brunn was also a convicted felon and shouldn’t have been able to purchase the .22 caliber rifle he used in his attack on the US Holocaust Museum.
In his 10,000 word manifesto, the “Supreme Gentleman” Elliot Rodger wrote:
“‘I had already done some research on handguns, and I decided to purchase the Glock 34 semiautomatic pistol, an efficient and highly accurate weapon. I signed all of the papers and was told that my pickup day was in mid-December,’ he wrote.
‘After I picked up the handgun, I brought it back to my room and felt a new sense of power. I was now armed. Who’s the alpha male now, bitches?’”
Several recent locations of mass shootings have been “gun-free zones” including Sandy Hook Elementary School, the movie theaters in Aurora and Lafayette attacked by Holmes and Houser, Virginia Tech, the Washington Navy Yard, Fort Hood and most notoriously the US Army Recruiting Center attacked by the jihadist Mohammad Abdulazeez in Chattanooga. Several of the guns used by Abdulazeez were also legally purchased.
France has some of the strictest gun control laws in the world, but that didn’t stop the Charlie Hebdo massacre or the Paris terrorist attacks which dwarf all the recent mass shootings in the United States. Gun control laws don’t stop other kinds of terrorists or psychopaths who are determined to go to crazytown on 24/7 cable news television: the Unabomber, the Tsarnaev brothers who blew up the Boston Marathon, the 9/11 hijackers, the Germanswings pilot Andreas Lubitz, and so on.
Of course none of this matters to leftists who are fixated on guns, not evil. Obama clearly wants to take away guns period and is exploiting these incidents to push his preexisting agenda. At some point, one of his successors will succeed in using Supreme Court appointments to nullify the Second Amendment and confiscation will begin.
