You have heard it from everyone: Drinking water is key in maintaining good health. Planet Earth is approximately 70% water and so is the human body. Could this be a coincidence? Of course not. Since almost everyone agrees that drinking water is an absolute necessity to remain healthy, let me highlight the obvious. In order for water to have the positive effects we all have heard about, it needs to be free of pollutants such as fluoride, pharmaceuticals, radioactive waste and heavy metals, to cite a few. Once you are sure that the water you have available is free from contaminants, it is necessary to create the habit of drinking enough water everyday. But why? Well here are twelve out of hundreds of reasons to drink at least 2.5 litres of water every day. Having the first glass of water as soon as you wake up, adding the juice of half a lemon, ensures that your body will be internally purified. Drinking enough water ensures that your body’s metabolism will start running stronger and therefore it will help you burn more of those pesky rings around your waist. Drinking enough water increases the speed with which muscle tissue grows as well as the reproduction of red blood cells that are produced in our body. More muscle means less fatty tissue and more red cells mean more oxygen circulating in your body. Water is known for its ability to help detox your blood, which in addition to keeping your body cleaner, it improves skin health. Often times the body confuses being thirsty with being hungry, so drinking water also prevents you from eating unnecessary food. Feeling hungry, especially at times when you are not supposed to eat, might mean that you have not had enough water. So, when feeling hungry at odd times of the day, drink some water and then determine if you were just thirsty or if you actually need food. In addition to cooling off and hydrating the body, water is an essential carrier of vitamins, minerals and other substances that are necessary for our body to function properly. Water is key in delivering nutrients to our body’s cells. Drinking water during and after exercising is key, along with relaxing, to help our body recover. Water is essential for nutrient absorption, chemical reactions and good digestion. That is why having a glass of water before every meal is very important to aid these three processes. Water participates in the biochemical breakdown of the food we eat. Water consumption is not limited to drinking from a glass or a bottle. Fruits and vegetables are full of water. So, complement your water intake with those two foods for a nutrient-water packed diet. Feeling tired often relates to you not drinking enough water. Fluids such as water help your body function better because organs need water as a car needs oil and gas to run properly. Carry a bottle, preferably not made of plastic, to avoid having to buy one every time you feel thirsty. Try glass and aluminum bottles instead. Bonus tip: It is not so difficult to drink 2.5 or 3 litres of water a day, but if it is hard at the beginning, you can distribute water ingestion in two-hour intervals, beginning at 8 am and ending at 10 pm. That will allow you to easily drink anywhere between 2.4 and 2.6 litres of water a day. Warning: So-called hydrating beverages that contain water as one of their ingredients do not have the same benefit than water. The only other liquid that seems to perform as well or better than water is coconut water. But please do not buy coconut water from the supermarket. That product is usually a combination of polluted tap water mixed with sugar; or worse, aspartame and other ingredients that will only cause harm to your body. Remember that every person has different needs when it comes to water intake. If you are not sure about how much water you need, I would recommend a useful app that I have been using for a couple of months, which gave me the correct amount of water I needed to drink. It is called My Water and you can download it for free from the Apple app store. If you are an Android user, please look for similar apps that can assist you in your new, healthier life. Happy drinking!
