The Syrian government announced today that it accepts the “cessation of combat operations” in its territory after the US and Russia agreed yesterday the start of a ceasefire in Syria after midnight on 27 February. “The Arab Republic of Syria announced its acceptance of the cessation of combat operations,” said a senior source from the Syrian Foreign Ministry in a statement released by the official news agency, SANA. The source pointed out that government approval is “based on the continuation of the military counter-terrorism efforts against ‘Dáesh”, the Al-Nusra Front and other terrorist organizations linked to Al Qaeda. “ The paper stresses that, to ensure the success of the ceasefire from February 27, “the Government states its readiness to continue its coordination with the Russian side to determine areas and armed groups to be included.” In addition, the Executive Committee stressed “the importance of controlling the borders, stopping the support of some countries to armed groups and prohibit these organizations strengthening their capacities or change their positions, which can lead to an undermining of the agreement”. The text did not name the states that support armed organizations, but Damascus has long accused Turkey and Saudi Arabia, among others, of providing support to terrorists operating in its territory. The ministry source also warned that “the government reserves its right in the Armed Forces to respond to any violation committed by these groups against Syrian civilians or the army.” Finally, he said that in accepting the ceasefire the government of Damascus reiterated “its commitment to stop the shedding of Syrian blood and restore security and stability to implement the popular will of the Syrians in a united Syria.” The US State Department revealed last night that Washington and Moscow had agreed to a ceasefire in Syria after midnight on February 27, which excludes the fighting ISIS and the Al-Nusra Front. “The cessation of hostilities on all parties involved will be implemented in the Syrian conflict,” the State Department said in a statement. The Supreme Commission for Negotiations (CSN), the alliance of the Syrian opposition, has accepted the pact “provisionally”, although it will make a final decision this week. Shortly after the announcement, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad called for parliamentary elections for April 13. March 15 will mark five years since the conflict began and whose consequence has been the death of at least 260,000 people, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
