Occasionally with opinion pieces you kind of have to read between the lines of what the writer said to pull just a little more meaning from their words. Maybe something wasn’t quite clear enough and by squinting, or taking a leap of faith, you can almost imagine what else the writer wanted to impart but couldn’t quite bring himself to do it. That’s not the problem in a piece entitled Cruz vs Rubio by Erick Erickson at The Resurgent.

The first few paragraphs gives Erickson’s insight into what he sees happening with Donald Trump as well as the lower tier runners. But then we get into the main matchup. I’m not going to cut and paste every line, but have selected a few that caught my eye. There’s no parsing of words. No digging for a hidden meaning. There is also no, I repeat, no endorsement.

  •  “If voters feel like things are coming to an end in this country without drastic action, they really do not have a choice between Rubio and Cruz. They have only Cruz.”
  •  “Rubio, on the other hand, is the candidate for voters who think the best days are still ahead of us regardless of what happens in 2016.”
  •  “For critics of Cruz, he cannot win. The reality is that Cruz can win, but if he wins those lobbyists and politicians attacking him will be out of a job.”
  • “For critics of Rubio, he will not go far enough. The reality is that Rubio may have an easier time winning, but his critics do not believe he will go far enough…to fix the problems in Washington.”

If you can only read one article outside of RedState today, I encourage a glance at Erickson’s. It’s about ten paragraphs that will be well worth your time, quick to get through, and won’t take up an entire coffee break. Then, if you haven’t done so already, decide what it is you expect from your next Commander-in-Chief.
