Elections seen as test for Merkel’s refugee policy – YouTube
Germany is holding three regional elections seen as a test for the refugee policy of Chancellor Angela Merkel.
Opinion polls indicate that Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union will remain the largest in Saxony-Anhalt. But the party could lose in Baden-Wuerttemberg in the west where the Greens’ popularity is growing. And in Rhineland-Palatinate, the race is too close to call. The anti-refugee Alternative for Germany, the AFD, is projected to gain ground amid the unease over Merkel’s open-door policy. But Berlin insists that gains for the AFD wouldn’t change the government’s immigration policy. Last year, over a million asylum seekers entered Germany.
