Regime Changers Whitewashing “Cheap” Destruction of Libya

This just in: President Barack Obama has defended America’s involvement in the 2011 NATO-imposed regime change in Libya, saying he had a UN mandate and it only cost $1 billion, which “is very cheap.”Obama concedes that Libya turned into a “mess” in the aftermath, however, that was all “Europe’s fault”, particularly Britain and France, saying he had “more faith in the Europeans, given Libya’s proximity, being invested in the follow-up.”

Regardless, the fact remains that the war on Libya, in collaboration with various radical groups and Persian Gulf Arab states, was well prepared. To this end, French and British intelligence were on the ground and coordinating the “protesters” in Benghazi since February 2011. The UK and France had prepared themselves for attacking Libya – with full US support.

Obama is free to shift the blame on Europe. But he cannot change the fact that the US-backed war helped turn Libya into a failed state. Unleashed under the auspices of UN Security Council Resolution 1973, the war did not result in a democratic society either.

Instead, it broke down into a sectarian and brutal conflict, turning a once functioning state and society into a dystopia into which ISIL and other terror outfits have gained a foothold and been able to spread their malign influence. Lest we forget, there were no terrorist training camps in Libya and ISIL was not there prior to the US-NATO “humanitarian” intervention.

Another grievous consequence of the chaos is a refugee crisis that has seen tens of thousands of desperate people to escape the hell the country has become, willing to risk a perilous voyage across the Mediterranean in order to do so. Thousands have drowned in the attempt with more sure to follow. This is while those who make it to the other side of the water face an uncertain future.

They are never welcomed, nor given sanctuary when they somehow manage to reach mainland Europe. On the contrary, not merely content with helping to destroy the country, European governments shamefully refuse to recognize them as refugees. Instead, they demonise and dehumanize these desperate people, treating them not as human beings but as British Prime Minister David Cameron puts it, a “swarm” of criminals.

After five years, it is important to record this litany of disaster in order to counter the moves that are still afoot in European capitals and in Washington, to deny responsibility and claim that Libya is on the way to becoming a democracy.

The Libyan people are victims of the West’s crude attempt to dominate the Middle East. Meaning, the invasion of Libya was not motivated by the desire to help effect democratic change to ensure that the lucrative oil contracts and economic ties forged with the Gaddafi regime were protected and upheld after its demise.

This was their motivation and a failed state is the result. In between, no one in the Western capitals is interested in justice and human rights, let alone forge a unity government that can rebuild and stabilize the country.

The regime changers in Washington and Europe have never been a source of stability in the Middle East and North Africa. On the contrary, their presence and double game has only brought unremitting suffering and despair. The invasion of Libya caused massive humanitarian suffering. The permanent winners were the Military-Industrial Complex and the Western machine of endless militarism and wars. Little wonder the “humanitarian” invasion later provided a pretext for yet another war: Syria.
