US President Barack Obama comes under mounting criticism for opposing a measure that would let Americans sue Saudi Arabia over the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
Many families of the 9/11 attack victims who believe Riyadh played a role in the terror assaults accuse Obama of siding with the Saudis. If signed into law, the bill would repeal the immunity of foreign governments from prosecution in domestic courts. Saudi Arabia has cautioned US legislators against passing the measure warning of economic retaliation. The families of the victims and Obama’s fellow democrats are separately pressurizing him into declassifying a 28-page section of a congressional report which allegedly reveals Saudi Arabia’s involvement in the attacks. Both presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders have demanded that the blank pages be revealed to the public. The developments come ahead of Obama’s visit to the kingdom on Tuesday.
