Almost 250,000 Evacuated After Japan Quakes | 17 April 2016 | Close to a quarter of a million people have been evacuated from their homes as the search for survivors goes on after a series of strong earthquakes in southern Japan. The rescue operation in the worst-affected region, Kumamoto prefecture, continued overnight, despite deteriorating weather conditions, with strong winds and heavy rain. Some 25,000 soldiers from Japan's self-defence forces have been deployed to the area, along with police, firefighters and medics.
