VANCOUVER/COAST SALISH TERRITORIES – A solidarity gathering Saturday was held in memory of land defenders Berta Cáceres and Nelson García from the Civic Council of Popular and Indigenous Organizations of Honduras(COPINH), Secwepemc Elder and Warrior “Wolverine” William Jones Ignace and the 43 students from Ayotzinapa Normal Teachers College in Guerrero, Mexico, and in support of Gustavo Castro Soto who was wounded during the assasination of Berta Cáceres.
The gathering was held in solidiarity with the Lenca Indigenous people defending their territory and preventing the construction of the Agua Zarca mega-dam, the Blueberry River First Nations from northeast BC fighting against the proposed Site C Dam, shale gas and LNG development in their territories and in support of the ongoing hunger strike by Kristin Henry outside BC Hydro headquarters opposing Site C.
The event was organized by Café Rebelde and Vancouver Solidarity with Ayotzinapa.
