Syria in Last 24 Hours: Al-Nusra Front Terrorists Sustain Heavy Losses in Army Offensive in Dara’a

The Syrian army and popular forces continued their military operations against the terrorist groups in Dara’a province, and killed scores of militants over the past 24 hours.

The Syrian army killed and wounded scores of the Al-Nusra Front militants in Dara’a province.

The Syrian army also inflicted heavy losses on the terrorist groups in other key province across Syria.

Dara’a

Positions, artillery units and a command center of al-Nusra Front and its affiliated groups in the Southern districts of Dara’a city came under attack by the Syrian military forces, reports from Southern Syria said Wednesday, adding that several militants, including a senior field commander, were killed in the attacks.

The Syrian soldiers hit the al-Qaeda-affiliated al-Nusra Front’s command center, strongholds and artillery units in Sweidan bazaar, and the neighborhoods of al-Sibeh, old customs house and al-Karak in the Southern and Eastern sides of al-Manshiyeh in Dara’a al-Balad, which claimed the lives of several terrorists, including the commander of Liwa Towhid al-Janoub, and destroyed their military hardware in large scale.

Earlier reports said on Wednesday that the Syrian Army troops and National Defense Forces targeted the gathering centers and positions of al-Nusra Front near a key city in the Northern part of Dara’a province and forced the terrorists to pull forces back from the surrounding farms of the city.

The Syrian government forces’ offensives against positions of al-Nusra Front near the strategic city of Kafr Shams ended in the killing or wounding of several terrorists and forced the remaining pockets of the militants to retreat from the farms in the Northeastern side of the city.

Aleppo

The Syrian Army troops and their allies are pushing back terrorists in the Northwestern districts of Aleppo city after they purged another neighborhood of foreign-backed militants.

The terrorist groups left behind tens of the dead and wounded members and fled their positions near Akthar al-Bazar Institute towards Jam’iyat al-Zahra axis.

The institute and its surroundings are under the full control of the Syrian soldiers and their allies from Hezbollah.

Earlier reports said that Syrian soldiers and Hezbollah fighters, backed up by the country’s fighter jets and Russian artillery units, repelled the terrorist groups’ offensives and in a rapid coordinated counterattack stormed the militants’ positions and drove them back from the districts of Aleppo.

At least 70 members of the terrorist groups of al-Nusra Front, Nouriddeen al-Zinki movement and Jeish al-Muhajireen Wal Ansar were killed and many more were wounded in their failed attacks on the government forces’ strongholds across Aleppo’s Northern and Northwestern districts.

The terrorists withdrew forces from Al-Zahra Association Quarter, the Air Force Intelligence (AFI) building, the Great Prophet Mosque and al-Zahra-Lairamoun axis, under the heavy fire, bombardments and attacks of the Syrian government forces.

Homs

At least 170 ISIL terrorists were killed and many more wounded in the joint offensives of the Syrian Army troops and the Russian Air Force in an oil-rich region in the Eastern part of Homs province.

The Syrian-Russian coordinated heavy attacks on the ISIL positions near al-Hail oilfield ended in the killing of at least 170 militants, while the terrorist group’s military hardware sustained major damage too.

Reports said earlier on Wednesday that the Syrian Army troops’ strong defense and heavy fire fended off the ISIL fresh round of attacks on the government forces’ strongholds in the oil-rich region of Homs province, claiming the lives of several terrorists, including a Saudi field commander.

The ISIL’s large-scale assaults to break through the government forces’ positions in the Eastern and Northern sides of al-Sha’er oilfield failed and the ISIL suffered a heavy death toll and fled the battlefield without any result.

One of the senior ISIL commanders in Homs province with the Saudi nationality was among the killed terrorists.

The ISIL armored vehicles and mortars sustained major damage in the attacks.

Idlib

The Syrian Army’s artillery units, tipped off by the intelligence agents, opened heavy fire at a secret meeting of al-Nusra Front’s commanders in the militant-held town of Khan Sheikhoun, leaving several terrorists dead and many more wounded.

The Syrian artillery units, deployed to Suran and Ma’an (14 kilometers away from Khan Sheikhoun) shelled the meeting of a number of the al-Qaeda-affiliated al-Nusra Front’s field commanders gathered in a former driving school in the Eastern part of the town of Khan Sheikhoun, which claimed the lives of at least 25 terrorists.

Ahmad Naddaf, Khaled al-Bakri and Ibrahim al-Barazi were among the killed terrorists in the attack.

Khan Sheikhoun – home to approximately 50,000 residents – was controlled by government troops until the summer of 2014 when the al-Nusra Front launched a major offensive in Southern Idlib and eventually seized the town.

Turkish ground op in Syria unlikely due to presence of Russian air force – Lavrov

http://www.veteranstoday.com/2016/05/04/turkish-ground-op-in-syria-unlikely-due-to-presence-of-russian-air-force-lavrov/

A foreign military is unlikely to launch a ground operation in Syria due to the Russian Airspace Forces there, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in commenting on the readiness Turkey has expressed to send troops to Syria “if necessary.”

“I do not think that anyone will decide to play dangerous games and carry out any provocations due to the fact that there are Russian Aerospace Forces stationed [in Syria],” Lavrov said when asked about the possibility of a Turkish or Saudi Arabian incursion.

The Foreign Minister stressed that “it’s necessary to educate, those who are trying to advocate” a military invasion because it “would be a direct aggression,” according to Sputnik.

“But I don’t think that they have any justification, at least some excuse [for a military invasion], because the ceasefire [in Syria] is strengthening after all,” he added.

Earlier on Wednesday, Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu told Al-Jazeera that Ankara is ready to send ground troops to Syria “if it becomes necessary… to provide for our own security.”

Lavrov said that a third party had tried to manipulate the US into shielding terrorists from the Al-Nusra Front group in Syria.

“During the negotiations, our US partners actually tried to draw the borders of this ‘zone of silence’ to include a significant portion of positions occupied by Al-Nusra [Front]. We managed to exclude this as absolutely unacceptable,” he said.

“This indicates that someone wants to use the Americans. I do not believe that it is in their interest to shield Al-Nusra [Front],” the FM stressed.
