No, You’re Not Really Moving If Trump Wins
Every presidential election cycle, celebrities and regular-folk alike claim that if a certain candidate wins, they’ll move elsewhere. The temper tantrum may sound good, but no one actually follows through with it.
Most recently, actress, producer, Hillary Clinton superfan, and all-around feminist maniac Lena Dunham declared she would indeed move to Canada if Donald Trump became president. As CNN reported:
“I know a lovely place in Vancouver, and I can get my work done from there,” Dunham said Monday at the Matrix Awards, which honors women in the communications industry, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “I know a lot of people have been threatening to do this, but I really will.”
Please, PLEASE keep your promise, Lena! But really, though, she won’t. This is the same woman who announced last week that if she were a man, she’d kill herself. (She’s one of those women who possesses such hatred for men that she needs some serious help.)
Ms. Dunham isn’t the only celebrity to make such a statement about leaving the country if Donald becomes President Trump this November. There are plenty more, and they are the usual unhinged type. As reported in March by The Washington Post:
A number of celebrities, including the Rev. Al Sharpton, Whoopi Goldberg, Rosie O’Donnell and Cher, have threatened to flee the country if Trump wins the election in November. Jon Stewart says he plans to escape planet Earth altogether. Rob Calabrese, a Canadian radio host, has urged Americans to join him on Cape Breton Island, in northeastern Nova Scotia.
Sharpton, Rosie, and Cher? I would be pleased if they joined Lena in Canada, but they won’t. Because no one actually follows through with this kind of thing.
As has been obvious for a while, I am not a Trump fan. Never have been. I was excited about the possibilities this election cycle before Trump entered the race. Now we live in the embarrassing reality where Donald Trump is the current GOP front-runner. As much as I despise that, it isn’t pushing me to leave the country. The same goes for a Hillary Clinton win. I would stay right here, live my life as usual, and continue to complain about them and their destructive administrations.
What would a move accomplish? I guarantee you that no candidate in the race is concerned about where you set up residence past election day. As much as I may personally dislike whomever inhabits the White House (see 2008 to present), I still prefer the United States of America to any other country in the world.
Regardless of the cultural and political spiral we’re in, the freedoms, opportunities, and prosperity we are blessed to enjoy certainly trump (sorry) those in any other nation. Most importantly, I love this country too much to leave it behind and let it continue to decline. I will always do my part by being vocal about my concerns, and also casting my vote when I’m able. I may get frustrated with politics and politicians, and grow weary of election cycles such as this one, but it encourages me to stay involved more than it pushes me to leave it all behind.
So threaten to move if you don’t get your way. You’re welcome to do so, but you actually won’t.
