Israeli whistle-blower indicted over release terms
SteveLendmanBlog: Israel Indicts Vanunu
by Stephen Lendman
Israel finds ways of giving the term rogue state new meaning – former nuclear technician Mordechai Vanunu a victim of its viciousness.
He’s a heroic whistleblower – 30 years ago revealing Israel was and remains nuclear armed and dangerous.
He was kidnapped, beaten, drugged, secretly tried, and politically imprisoned for 18 years, mostly in harsh solitary confinement – for revealing what everyone has a right to know.
Since release in 2004, he’s been constantly hounded and monitored, imprisoned without confinement, his fundamental freedoms denied, reimprisoned several times, virtually certain again after his latest indictment.
He’s irresponsibly accused of violating the terms of his release, including:
meeting with two US nationals in East Jerusalem in 2013 without permission;
moving to a new apartment in the same building in 2014 without notifying Israeli authorities; and
appearing on Israel’s Channel 2 television on September 4, 2015, discussing his 1986 arrest and imprisonment, as well as dangers of Israel’s nuclear program, including its Dimona plant hazards.
At the time, Channel 2 said all material discussed was cleared for broadcast by Israel’s military censor. Police questioned Vanunu anyway. A Jerusalem court ordered a week of house arrest – with no Internet or contact with journalists.
He has no updated knowledge of Israel’s nuclear program since arrested and imprisoned in 1986 – saying in his Channel 2 interview, he has no new secrets to reveal.
He wants the right to renounce his Israeli citizenship and join his wife in Norway, Theology Professor Kristin Joachimsen. They were married last year in a Jerusalem Lutheran church.
He’s barred from emigrating solely to continue longstanding harassment. Claiming he poses a national security threat is a fabricated pretext.
Israel continues endless repressive treatment. Perhaps Netanyahu intends eliminating him the way Sharon murdered Arafat. Polonium poisoning from something he ate killed him.
