Gary Lindorff
There is an elephant lying
flat out on the ground,
depressed, wasted.
His life is giving rides.
I know exactly how he feels,
that’s the crazy part.
Believe me,
some days I am lying in the dust,
my beautiful body
that was created to inhabit wide open spaces,
succumbing to the crush of gravity,
inert,
imprisoned by the scale
of what used to be my strength!
My skin, just as cracked and creviced
as my drought-stricken Mother. . .
My great trumpeting voice
reduced to a whisper,
a mere fluting in my brain.
I used to dream of rampaging
like a furious bull-king
through the village,
bulldozing buildings down as if they were grass huts,
sending people running every which-way,
scooping up their children.
Now I just wish I could stand up
and once more
be proud of what I am.
