Soda and Gun Banning Super Nanny Michael Bloomberg Booed For Not Being Sufficiently Maternal
Former Mayor Michael Bloomberg is a Super Nanny who wants to protect people from themselves, each other, and inanimate objects. In his corner-padded utopia nothing will ever scare or upset you. A 24/7 global safe space, if you will. But even so, the mighty mother got booed and hissed this weekend by college students because he claimed to disapprove of “safe-space culture” during a commencement address.
“The fact that some university boards and administrations now bow to pressure and shield students from these ideas through “safe spaces,” “code words” and “trigger warnings” is, in my view, a terrible mistake,” said Bloomberg. “The whole purpose of college is to learn how to deal with difficult situations — not run away from them. A microaggression is exactly that: micro. And one of the most dangerous places on a college campus is a safe space, because it creates the false impression that we can insulate ourselves from those who hold different views.
“We can’t do this, and we shouldn’t try — not in politics or in the workplace,” he continued. “In the global economy, and in a democratic society, an open mind is the most valuable asset you can possess.”
If that sounds out of character for Bloomberg, the money mom behind “Moms Demand Action”, you’re wrong. It is illogical for him. But illogic and self-contradiction are entirely in character, just as they are for all progressives.
Nanny staters always think they are doing the right and reasonable thing. They don’t think they are suggesting something radical when they tell you to give up your freedoms in exchange for their own personal version of utopia. So it is entirely in character for him to criticize what the students think they deserve in terms of being shielded from the world while not seeing how his own efforts are of a piece. To put it another way, he’s not opposed to safe spaces in principle, he just wants to be the one who defines them. “Let me be the mommy.”
Just like any liberal.
