Remember the days when only Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina mattered in the primary process? Those three states were unnecessarily given so much power to de facto pick the Republican nominee that by the time other states began to vote, the field had already narrowed to in many cases just a single candidate. Not very democratic when the majority of Americans have no say in who represents them in the Fall.
Enter Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp. Several years ago, he had the brilliant idea of Southern states banding together, picking an early primary date, and making the South matter in the process again. Well, it took him some time, and not everyone got on board (Florida?), but March 1st was the first Southern Super Tuesday, or SEC Primary as many people refer to it.
Regardless of your feelings on the primary outcome to date, Secretary of State Kemp has forever changed the landscape of the process, giving a voice to millions of voters that previously had none. What’s next up for Secretary Kemp? Who knows, but he was talking about the SEC Primary years ago at the Gathering, chances are he may give us a sneak peek of what’s next in Denver in August.
