Gun Control Zealots Admit Closing “Terror Gap” Wouldn’t Have Stopped Orlando Shooter

(Before It's News)

Democrats bravely stood up and kept standing for hours on end in Congress in a grandstanding filibuster intended to draw attention away from pesky things like millions and millions of devout cultists (whether you believe it’s through perversion of Islam or adherence to its original intent) determined to destroy our country, and instead kept the attention squarely where it belongs: on making sure an unaccountable list curated by unelected officials can remain in a position to deprive people of their constitutional rights on a whim.

Now look, I’m not trying to foster unnecessary outrage. As I’ve said, there’s a difference between outrage and Outrage®; but in this case, yes, you should be upset that they are wasting the American people’s time on closing the so-called “terror gap.”

Here’s how WaPo defines this gap which is sucking all the attention away from ISIS, the guys who actually encouraged exactly what the Orlando shooter did.

House Democrats gathered Wednesday morning in a room in the basement of the Capitol to plot a path forward. Afterward, leaders said they hoped to press for more thorough gun controls, including expanded background checks and a renewal of the lapsed assault-weapons ban, but they said they are focused first on closing “the terror gap.”

“We have a pretty simple message — this Congress should not leave this week without giving us a vote on something very simple: No fly, no buy,” said Rep. Xavier Becerra (D-Calif.), chairman of the House Democratic Caucus. “If you can’t fly because you’re on a watch list by our government and you’re not allowed on an airplane, you should not be able to enter a gun shop and walk out with an assault weapon.”

So let’s put aside the fact that this is a list that deprives Americans of due process, that pesky liberty that the founders wished they’d had when the British came to confiscate their property. Let’s put aside that there is no clear appeals process to get off the list and no defined method for how you get on it. Let’s focus instead on one question: would this have stopped the shooter who was, in fact, not even on the list anymore?

According to the very people proposing it? No.

That was Ladd Everett, Director of communications at Coalition to Stop Gun Violence. And as he admits, no, it wouldn’t actually have stopped Omar.

So just to reiterate, the last 24 hours of grandstanding by Democrats were all an attempt to draw attention to the urgent need to address that which allowed the shooter access to his weapons, and the very focus of their attention won’t actually do anything to address that urgent need.

In other words, they’re wasting everyone’s time.

Oh, by the way, Mr. Everett’s wish that there could be a mechanism that would alert authorities of an attempted purchase by people who had EVER been on the list? Yeah, it’s already supposed to do that. Somehow that government efficiency failed to activate in this instance.

It’s almost as though the only thing the government is good at is collecting names to put on an unaccountable list. And now the Democrats want to expand the authority of that unaccountable list.

Amazing considering how many Democrats openly opposed the Patriot Act following 9/11 and that this entire drama they’re milking on the Senate floor only has authority because of it.

Enough political posturing. You want to solve the gun problem? Stop disarming law abiding citizens.
