Giuliani: I didn’t “forget” 9/11, I “abbreviated” it.
After making the distinctly incorrect remark on Monday that the U.S. didn’t have any successful radical Islamic terrorist attack inside the United States before Obama came along, Rudy Giuliani has quite an interesting explanation for his horrifically embarrassing oversight of the deadliest terror attack on United States soil- an attack that he personally handled as mayor on September 11th, 2001.
Giuliani explained to the NY Daily News on Tuesday that there is a perfectly sensible explanation for what he said. Ready?
“I’m not there to give a major 45-minute policy address…You speak in somewhat abbreviated language… All human beings speak in abbreviated language at times…When you’re giving a speech, you only have five minutes, you can’t give an encyclopedic explanation.”
As a reminder, here is his original gaffe from Monday in full:
“Under those eight years, before Obama came along, we didn’t have any successful radical Islamic terrorist attack inside the United States.”
See any abbreviations in the sentence above? To the contrary, it was a very specific and direct statement, it was just astoundingly inaccurate.
In fact, another terrorist attack Giuliani inexplicably missed is the 1993 World Trade Center Bombing, which also took place in his hometown of New York. Giuliani was running for mayor at the time of the attack, so he had to have been well aware of it.
But Giuliani clearly subscribes to the Trump camp motto, “when you’re caught saying something incorrect, give the worst explanation ever and then pretend it sounds logical.”
