Fellow Conservative,
This absolutely breaks my heart. Another tragedy at the VA.
Peter Kaisan was a 76-year-old veteran. He had been trying to get an appointment at the VA for months for a mental health appointment.
Every time he showed up at his local VA hospital and begged to be seen by a doctor, he was turned away.
This past week, he showed up at his local VA hospital one more time. He begged to be admitted. He asked for their help.
For the umpteenth time, the VA told this man that there was nothing they could do for him.
So, Mr. Kaisan walked out into the VA hospital’s parking lot, got into his car, put a gun to his head, and committed suicide.
This is the reality today in the Department of Veterans Affairs and tragedies like this keep happening.
If this is VA Secretary Robert A. McDonald’s best, then we have a serious problem. When veterans are literally killing themselves on VA property because the hospital staff ignores them, then his best is obviously not good enough!
I am angry. I’m livid. I don’t think I’ve ever been angrier reading an article.
Out of all the stories we’ve heard about suffering and needless death inside the VA, this is by far the most avoidable. Just let him see a doctor!
But they couldn’t even do that. They couldn’t even be bothered to admit him into the hospital’s mental health wing.
I cannot imagine how hopeless someone would have to feel to commit suicide in a hospital parking lot.
We owe our veterans better than this. When President Obama nominated the CEO of Procter and Gamble to become VA Secretary, I had high hopes that a person with private sector experience would be able to cut through the red tape and fix the bureaucracy.
He failed. No one has been fired. The people who were actually demoted ended up appealing their case and winning their old jobs back.
And veterans are still dying. They just keep dying.
I weep for the plight of our veterans. I literally cried when I read how this man felt so hopeless that took his own life right in the VA parking lot.
It doesn’t have to be like this. These men and women fought for us and now that they are suffering from the physical and mental wounds of that service, the VA is nowhere to be found.
VA Secretary McDonald needs to be replaced. End of story. When veterans are shooting themselves in the hospital parking lot because they can’t see a doctor or jumping in front of trains because they can’t even get through to the VA suicide hotline… enough is enough!
These men and women answered the call to protect you. Now it is time to return the service.
Sincerely,
Joe Otto
