Betraying Humanity in Yemen: UN Hustled Into a Game of Complicity

Nothing strengthens Saudi war crimes in Yemen so much as silence on the part of the United Nations.
In these terrible times silence becomes cowardice when occasion demands speaking out the whole truth and acting accordingly. The point is, there is no feasible excuse for what the UN is doing, for what it has made of itself. The world body has chosen to put politics before people, money before morality, dividends before decency, fanaticism before fairness, and International Law and International Humanitarian Law before the unspeakable agonies of defenceless civilians.
Here, the UN says some 14 million Yemenis are going hungry, with at least 370,000 children suffering from malnutrition. Some 15 months into a devastating war led by Saudi Arabia and its partners in crime, the UN says the situation has the potential to exacerbate and turn into a public health crisis – with about half of the population in urgent need of food and medical aid. Moreover, the UN says some 500,000 children under the age of five are suffering from malnutrition, with two thirds of them so sick they could die if they don’t receive immediate assistance. But then the UN takes it quietly.
Why? Because its rich member says so. This isn’t fair, we would think in this awkward situation. This isn’t compassion and humanitarianism. It is something, but it’s not compassion and accountability. The world body has been hustled into a game of complicity, one it never intended to play. But it did – in broad daylight and before the cameras.
The powerful reality is that the United Nations has long been bullied by its most powerful and richest members, and UN secretaries-general ( plus many member states) have always been forced to grit their teeth and take it quietly. But few nations have been more publicly brazen in this practice than Saudi Arabia, and earlier this summer, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon managed to get in a dig at the regime over its blackmail-style tactics.
Ban openly admitted that it was only after Riyadh threatened to cut off funding to the UN that he bowed to its demand to remove the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen, where it has launched an illegal war, from a list of violators of children’s rights contained in the annex of his annual Children and Armed Conflict report.
Ban told reporters “It is unacceptable for UN member states to exert undue pressure.” Meaning, he had no choice but to remove the Saudis from the “List of Shame” because why not? After all, he himself said the Saudis showed him some money.
This is yet another reminder of what the world body has become so lately. The Saudis offer a prime example of their criminality in Yemen and the UN is more than happy to bury the underlying hypocrisy of its support for a few dollars more.
Regardless, the world body needs to wake up to the real dangers that are facing humanity in Yemen. The UN has failed Yemen. It is betraying humanity in a time of great crisis. Through silence and complicity, or by taking part directly in the running war against the poorest nation in the Middle East, some of its member states are also failing Yemen, too timid and tradition-bound to warn of the terrible new dangers that the region is facing.
What Yemen needs is a warning of the severe dangers that its people are facing, combined with an outline of the practical steps that are needed to avert these dangers, including an immediate end to the war. The fact that Riyadh has money to silence the UN and get off of the hook from the scrutiny of its actions must not be an excuse for despair and inaction, but instead a powerful reason for fighting back against Riyadh’s blackmail-style tactics, for working with courage and dedication to stop this insanity.
The UN has what it takes to stop the Saudis from sanitising their war crimes in Yemen. In this, the world body is never alone. It has all the support it can get from its conscientious members. It only needs to stand its ground, speak out the whole truth, and act accordingly for the highest of moral purposes.
