Donald Trump Jr. Flubs Valid Media Criticism With “Warming Up The Gas Chamber” Reference
Only in the world of Trump, can a valid point be turned into a mini controversy. Donald Trump Jr. was doing an interview on a local radio station in Philadelphia when he started talking about the media and how they have been treating Hillary Clinton vs. Republicans, and of course his father, Donald Trump.
Here is what was said:
“The media has been her number one surrogate in this,” he said in an interview on 1210 WPHT radio in Philadelphia with host Chris Stigall. “Without the media, this wouldn’t even be a contest, but the media has built her up. They’ve let her slide on every in-discrepancy, on every lie, on every DNC game trying to get Bernie Sanders out of this thing. If Republicans were doing that, they’d be warming up the gas chamber right now.”
Immediately, there was discussion and debate over whether or not the reference was to the Holocaust and yet another wink and nod to the alt-right fan base the Trump campaign has engaged previously.
Whether it was a Holocaust reference or not, this is another case of team Trump making a valid point yet completely ruining it by saying something stupid. I’m willing to give Trump Jr. the benefit of the doubt and say he wasn’t referring to the Holocaust. The point being, he completely made everybody forget what he was talking about because the words, “warming up the gas chamber” is all they’ll focus on.
Hillary has largely been given a pass by the mainstream media for behavior that would never be tolerated if she were a Republican. Trump is 100% right about that.
But this will get completely ignored and the fault for that falls completely on the Trump campaign. Trump is the one who has repeatedly re-tweeted white nationalist accounts on Twitter. He also refused to disavow David Duke in an interview with Jake Tapper, acting like he had no idea who Duke was and saying he knows nothing about white supremacists. He did eventually disavow Duke but the damage was done.
Trump is always talking about political leaders and policies being “smarter.” Perhaps they should start with their own campaign.
