Good News(?): Majority of Hillary Voters Say They’ll Vote Republican Down Ballot
This is a pretty fascinating data point to come from USA Today, and while I wonder if the results can be replicated, it is actually pretty good news for people who want to see the Republican Party continue to succeed despite Donald Trump’s existence.
In a nationwide USA TODAY/Suffolk University Poll, a third of Clinton’s supporters, 32%, say they are “very likely” to split their votes, and another 20% say they are “somewhat” likely. Twenty percent say they are “not very likely” to split the ticket, and 23% say they’ll vote for Democratic candidates up and down the ballot.
In contrast, a majority of Donald Trump supporters say they probably or definitely will vote only for Republicans. A third, 33%, say they plan to vote a straight GOP ticket up and down the ballot, and another 20% say they are “not very likely” to vote for Democratic candidates for other offices.
The survey of likely voters, including 483 Clinton supporters and 409 Trump voters, has margins of error of +/-4.5 percentage points and 4.9 points for the partisan subsamples.
Now, if this turns out to be the case, and I am somewhat optimistic on it, then that means the Senate can actually remain in GOP hands – which would certainly (in theory) help curb whatever Clinton tries to do to America. It also keeps the momentum going for the party in 2018 and 2020.
However, there is a huge caveat here: there’s only one poll that shows this data (for now) if it becomes a trend, then we get some pretty good confirmation that people are voting for Hillary Clinton not because of Hillary Clinton, but because of Donald Trump. That would be a pretty crushing blow for people who have souls, shame, and feelings, so Hillary shouldn’t be affected too much.
But damn, that would also be kinda funny.
