You just can’t make this stuff up. General Dunford “has no facts” but he blames Russia in front of Congress for the attack on the Aleppo aid convoy. He appointed himself judge and jury, but skipped over the investigator part.
But then he goes even further into the Twilight Zone by saying that our defense industry partners need to be as “cutting edge” as we are. I can just imagine the reaction that got in Allied military commands.
Somehow I just don’t think that kind of decision making process is taught at West Point. It was put propaganda, and of course the Joint Chief of Staff was not going to buck the Secretary of Defense.
This is one of the reasons why American voters have always been wary of making generals presidents. The thought scares a lot of voters. I will date myself here by quoting the old American TV show Dragnet, where the infamous Sgt. Joe Friday would say, “Just the facts ma’am, just the facts.”
Ash Carter joined the Twilight Zone parade himself with his incredible twisting the knife statement that the Russians were responsible for the aid convoy attack whether they did it or not because of their “association” with the Syrian regime.

Speaking to the US Senate, the Pentagon’s leaders blamed Russia for the Aleppo aid convoy attack, but admitted they “had no facts.” Only US coalition planes should be allowed over Syria, they said, though that would require war against both Syria and Russia.
Defense Secretary Ash Carter and General Joseph Dunford, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, faced the Senate Armed Services Committee on Thursday to report on the ongoing military operations and “national security challenges” faced by the US. They also asked the senators for more reliable funding, saying the uncertainty was hurting the defense industry.
“Not only our people – our defense industry partners, too, need stability and longer-term plans to be as efficient and cutting-edge as we need them to be,” Carter told the senators.
The lawmakers were far less interested in the war against Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) than about the future of the Syrian government, Iran’s “malign influence,” and “aggression” by China and Russia – all ranked far ahead of terrorism on Carter and Dunford’s list of security challenges.
LAVROV MAKES HISTORY: ‘Ceasefires’ were bogus, nixes future ‘unilateral measures’

Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov made history today at the UN’s meeting of the Security Council, declaring that future unilateral pauses couched as ‘ceasefire agreements’ are off the table. He has skillfully referred to the mounting factual evidence of the US’s continued flagrant violations on any number of points of agreement over the course of this conflict.
These include primarily the violations of the ceasefire itself, in conjunction with officially leaked elements of the ‘secret text’ of the recent ceasefire which evidence that the US has been unable to reign in a number of groups signing onto previous ceasefires, let alone those groups the US claims to be moderates but did not sign onto the ceasefire, both of which continue to work closely with either ISIS or Jabat Al-Nusra. Russia has no doubt pointed out successfully that several of these groups are fictional entities, and are but operational synonyms of Al-Nusra (formerly called Al-Qaeda of the Levant), itself.
The impossible to ignore context here naturally is the ceasefire ending US joint attack alongside ISIS upon the Syrian Arab Army position at Deir ez-Zor which was sustained and lasted over an hour, despite calls from the Russian coordinating hotline which existed pursuant to standing agreements on deconfliction.
The other defining circumstances included the response of the US State Department at the emergency session of the UN Security Council a few nights ago, in particular the behaviour and callously undiplomatic remarks of representative Power, and the US’s following attempts to blame Russia for the attack on the Red Crescent aid convoy several days later, which increasingly appears as the result of either Al-Nusra militants on the ground or a US predator drone attack using an incendiary device.
Analysts and activists have long debated the utility of the ceasefire agreements. It had been noted, at times passionately, that the ceasefires were observed unilaterally by Russia and had the effect of allowing the US backed terrorist groups, whether organized under the ‘moderate’ banner or not, to rearm and regroup. Aid convoys had long been used as a backdoor to smuggle in needed dual-use basic supplies for repairing weapons, such as nuts, bolts, wiring – and even munitions and new weapons. It had long been documented that first aid and medicines intended for affected civilian populations generally wound up used by terrorist fighting groups inside of occupied parts of Aleppo.
Now this chapter comes to end, and it is revealed that Russia understood clearly all along that this was precisely the case. What was needed was a pretext, a consensus building show-and-tell to the Security Council which provides Russia and its allies on the Security Council and in the international community that ‘we tried Ceasefires – and this is what happened.
This set up the footwork for the final proverbial ‘flying mare’ that launched US foreign policy and its media hologram over the Russian bear’s shoulder and onto its back.

Indeed, it seems US and its Salafist allies are bent on splitting the Syrian baby and cleansing it of ethnic and religious minorities with a Taliban-like regime and Shaira Law, and Deir ez-Zor is likely condemned to suffer the similar fate of Homs.
In Homs, the pre-conflict population was more than 1 million people of mostly Sunni Muslims with substantial Christian and Alawite communities. Peter Crowley, senior foreign affairs correspondent at Politico, in August 2015 tweeted an extract from a 2008 Lonely Planet travel guide of Homs.
“These days, its Christian neighborhood is one of Syria’s most welcoming and relaxed, and Homs’ citizens are some of the country’s friendliest…That, combined with the city’s myriad leafy parks and gardens, sprawling al fresco coffee shop, outdoor corn-on-the-cob stands and restored souq where artisans still work, make Homs a wonderful place to kick back for a couple of days.”
In eight years, Homs has changed from a “wonderful place” to a ruinous heap. With the ceasefire likely to break down as Salafist rebels rearm and regroup, US and Saudi/Qatar/Turkey are well on the march towards turning Syria into another Afghanistan in the Mediterranean.
Syria in Last 24 Hours: Terrorists Sustain Heavy Losses in Army Offensive in Aleppo Province
The Syrian army attacked the Jeish Al-Fatah terrorists’ military positions in Aleppo province, and inflicted heavy losses on the militants over the past 24 hours.
The Syrian army killed and wounded scores of terrorists in the outskirts of the city of Aleppo.
The Syrian army also inflicted heavy losses on the terrorist groups in other key regions across Syria.
Aleppo
Syrian Army forces and their allies, supported by Russian Air Force airstrikes, inflicted consequential blows to Jeish al-Fatah militant group in an district in flashpoint city of Aleppo, North of Syria.
The Russian Air Force carried out several airstrikes over Bustan Al-Qasr District in Aleppo, and then the Syrian Army troops began a prompt attack on a Jeish al-Fatah weapon depot in the district, landing a direct hit on the terrorist group.
A Syrian Army source said that these “Russian airstrikes paved the way for the Syrian Army assault inside the Old Aleppo district”.
Following the airstrikes, the Syrian Army also stormed the militants’ defenses, inflicting severe damage on Fatah al-Halab militant group.
Currently, large groups of Syrian Army are attempting to advance in the Old Aleppo districts, while their allies in the South continue their push inside Housing Project 1070.
Earlier on Thursday, the Syrian army and Hezbollah fighters took full control of several buildings in Ramouseh region in the Southern parts of Aleppo province.
The army soldiers, backed by Hezbollah fighters, stormed the Southern districts of Aleppo as they targeted Jeish al-Fatah’s defense lines at the Old Ramouseh district.
According to battlefield sources, pro-government forces clashed heavily with the Jeish al-Fatah terrorists who were positioned in the buildings, destroying a gathering and a site for the militants and setting up military points in the area surrounding it.
According to reports, tens of terrorists were killed, others were injured and their weaponry and ammunition were destroyed.
Homs
Syrian Army forces continued their large-scale offensive on ISIL positions in the Northeastern regions of Homs province on Thursday, and killed a host of terrorists in the area, an army source said.
The source said that Syrian Army forces, backed by several pro-government units, including the National Defense Forces (NDF) and Syrian Social Nationalist Party (SSNP), stormed ISIL defenses near the strategic hilltop of Tal Sawwan, Northeast of Homs province.
Following a series of intense fighting, Syrian Army Forces established control over several hilltops and points located between Jabal Al-Sha’er and Tal Sawwan.
The main objective of this operation in Homs is to recapture Jabal Al-Sha’er and establish control over the Northern road to Palmyra (Tadmur).
As the operation is underway, latest reports from al-Wa’ar district in Homs said that 120 militants, accompanied by their families, have been evacuated from the region to the Northern parts of the province as a result of an agreement with the government.
Tallal al-Barazi, the governor-general of Homs, said that negotiations have been held between the two Syrian sides without any foreign interference to reach an agreement for reestablishment of security and stability in different regions.
Hama
The Syrian army, supported by the popular forces, retook control of the strategic Tal al-Aboudi heights in the Eastern parts of Maardas region in Northern Hama after a tough battle against the terrorists.
“The army troops also could regain control of al-Mathana region in Northern Hama in addition to al-Aboudi heights which means that the Maardas town has collapsed militarily,” an army source said on Thursday.
According to the source, the Syrian army and national defense forces could fortify their positions in the region, preparing for operations to take back the silos located in the Western parts of Maardas from the terrorists.
The Syrian army and popular forces began large-scale operations in the Northern parts of Hama on Wednesday to drive terrorists out of the town of Maardas, near the important fortified village of Ma’an.
According to military sources, the army’s missile and artillery units targeted the terrorists’ positions inside the town concurrent with the start of the operations.
“The Army is advancing towards the town,” a source said.
Meantime, the army troops could drive back militants from the Southern parts of Maardas while fierce clashes still continue in the region.
Also, the Syrian forces could fully purge the terrorists from al-Ebada, Jabal al-Akrad and al-Khazan farms on their way towards Maardas.
Deir Ezzur
The Syrian and Russian warplanes launched coordinated airstrikes on ISIL’s gathering centers near al-Tharda mountain in the Eastern parts of Deir Ezzur, inflicting heavy toll and damage on the terrorist group.
A field source said on Thursday that the Syrian warplanes bombed the ISIL positions near al-Tharda mountain and al-Jafra village in Eastern Deir Ezzur and destroyed their strongholds and bases.
Also the Russian fighter jets pounded ISIL’s positions in Tal Barouk, Northwest of Deir Ezzur, as well as regions near al-Tharda mountain, Brigade 137 and Panorama, killing and injuring several terrorists.
On Wednesday, the Syrian army repulsed an ISIL offensive on Deir Ezzur city’s military airport as the country’s warplanes targeted gatherings of the terrorist group near al-Tharda mountain, Southeast of the province, a military source said.
“Scores of ISIL terrorists were killed in the aerial attacks, which also led to the destruction of several technical vehicles in the Southeastern region of Deir Ezzur province,” the source said.
The source added that the Syrian Army forces inflicted more casualties on the terrorists after they rebuffed an attack by ISIL militants on Deir Ezzur military airport.
Damascus
The Syrian army units established control over more areas in Eastern Ghouta in Damascus countryside after driving terrorists back from the region.
A military source confirmed that army units clashed with the militants, and managed to establish control over new parts of al-Rayhan farms which are located in the Northeastern parts of Douma city in Eastern Ghouta.
The source pointed out that the clashes erupted when army units confronted attempts by terrorists to attack a number of military posts in the farms.
He added that a counter-attack conducted by the army ended by expanding control in that area, killing tens of terrorists, injuring many others and destroying their weapons and equipment.

The war in Syria is significant in two ways. First, the outcome can reshape the Arab Middle East. Second, and perhaps more important, Syria is not simply about Syrians. The US, Russian, Iranian, Turkish, and French forces are engaged there along with the Islamic State (IS), al-Qaida, and secular Arabs. The Saudis and the rest of the Arab monarchies also exert political and economic influence on Syria. I have written in the past about how the growing crises in Eurasia are increasingly interacting. Syria is the place where that interaction is the greatest and most violent. Prior to World War II, there was a civil war in Spain. Nazi Germany and fascist Italy sent troops. The Soviet Union did as well. In addition, leftists from around the world flocked there to fight. The French and British refused to get involved, trying not to be drawn in. The Spanish Civil War was said to be a rehearsal for World War II. The major players of the European war were there—though some weren’t. New weapons were tried out. The civil war ended in April 1939, five months before Germany invaded Poland, which began World War II. Syria is drawing in major global and regional powers. When, for example, the US and Russia are engaged in a country – with very different goals and supporting hostile factions – it is certainly not something to dismiss out of hand.
